The challenges facing the United States healthcare system continue to evolve and raise expectations for physician leaders. These leaders serve at the intersection of clinical care and business realities and thus have the ability to influence improvement in healthcare quality and business performance. The purpose of this study was to determine hospitalist medical directors‘ performance on emotional intelligence (EI) competencies and their perceptions of the importance of these competencies to their leadership role.
