Attitudes Toward Osteopathic Medicine Scale: Development And Psychometrics, Mohammadreza Hojat Professor, Jennifer Desantis, Robert A Cain, Mark R Speicher, Lynn Bragan, Leonard H Calabrese

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Objective: To develop a valid and reliable instrument for measuring attitudes toward osteopathic medicine.

Methods: Participants included 5,669 first-year students from 33 U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine, who completed an online survey at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year. Using data from the nationwide Project in Osteopathic Medical Education and Empathy, we developed a 13-item instrument: Attitudes Toward Osteopathic Medicine Scale (ATOMS) and demonstrated the validity and reliability of its scores. The social desirability response bias was controlled in statistical analyses.

Results: The corrected item-total score correlations were all positive and statistically significant, and the effect sizes of item …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Third-Year Medical Students' Reflection Essays Regarding The Impact Of Covid-19 On Their Education., Erin L. Kelly, Allison R. Casola, Kelsey Smith, Samantha Kelly, Maria Syl D. De La Cruz

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed every aspect of healthcare delivery and training. Few studies have reported on the impact of these changes on the experiences, skill development, and career expectations of medical students.

METHOD: Using 59 responses to a short reflection essay prompt, 3rd year medical students in Philadelphia described how the COVID-19 pandemic affected their education in mid-2020. Using conventional content analysis, six main themes were identified across 14 codes.

RESULTS: Students reported concerns regarding their decreased clinical skill training and specialty exposure on their career development due to the loss of in-person experience during their family medicine …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

I had the opportunity to be involved with JCIPE even before I was a Jefferson student! I spent a year working at the Camden Coalition and got to assist with analyzing Student Hotspotting (SH) surveys. After coming to SKMC, I participated in the Health Mentors program in my first and second years and then went on to join an SH team during my third year. I got to serve as an alumni advisor for an SH team the following year and have since been working on a qualitative study of the SH process with an interprofessional team representing occupational therapy, …

The Clarion Case Competition, Jordan Mak, Cat-Trinh Phan, Francesca Girone, Mary Lloyd

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Hosted by the Center for Health Interprofessional Programs, University of Minnesota, the CLARION National Interprofessional Case Competition is designed to give healthcare students an interprofessional teamwork experience. In 2021, JCIPE sent a strong team consisting of two pharmacy students, Jordan Mak & Cat-Trinh Phan, and two nursing students, Francesca Girone & Mary Lloyd, to represent Jefferson. Our team successfully developed an innovative solution proposal to build a better healthcare system by conducting a root-cause analysis of a fictionalized event. Over the course of the project, our team formed a strong relationship, which culminated in a presentation and a …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

When last we wrote, we were just beginning to reflect on the global upheaval encapsulated in the COVID-19 pandemic and the new urgency to confront systemic racism. Some areas of the world have emerged from COVID-19 lockdowns while others are battling new variants with catastrophic consequences. The disparities in vaccine distribution continue to be an urgent problem, along with vaccine hesitancy, building trust between patients and the healthcare system, and establishing access to healthcare for underserved populations. So, while we may be nearing the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is much work to be done to tackle the complexities …

Gender Disparity In Evaluation Of Internal Medicine Clerkship Performance., Deborah J. Gorth, Rogan G. Magee, Sarah E. Rosenberg, Nina Mingioni

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Importance: Women studying medicine currently equal men in number, but evidence suggests that men and women might not be evaluated equally throughout their education.

Objective: To examine whether there are differences associated with gender in either objective or subjective evaluations of medical students in an internal medicine clerkship.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This single-center retrospective cohort study evaluated data from 277 third-year medical students completing internal medicine clerkships in the 2017 to 2018 academic year at an academic hospital and its affiliates in Pennsylvania. Data were analyzed from September to November 2020.

Exposure: Gender, presumed based on pronouns used in …

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel Jun 2021

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel

Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations

Previous reviews of the literature on medical mission trips have noted that there is a dearth of rigorous data collection and evaluation of the efficacy of medical missions to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Medical students are increasingly participating in these trips as global health curriculums become more popular and prevalent, and the literature about these international experiences has not been well-described. This rapid review aims to characterize the evaluation of medical mission trips for medical students to LMICs. This article is a rapid review of the literature using PRIMSA guidelines to search PubMed for studies about the evaluation of …

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Empathy, which involves understanding another person's experiences and concerns, is an important component for developing physicians' overall competence. This longitudinal study was designed to test the hypothesis that medical students' empathy can be enhanced and sustained by Humanitude Care Methodology, which focuses on perception, emotion and speech.

METHODS: This six-year longitudinal observational study examined 115 students who entered Okayama University Medical School in 2013. The study participants were exposed to two empathy-enhancing programs: (1) a communication skills training program (involving medical interviews) and (2) a Humanitude training program aimed at enhancing their empathy. They completed the Jefferson Scale of …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

One challenge facing healthcare training programs is balancing the need to provide students with interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) opportunities in the context of highly prescribed standards-driven curricula (e.g. nursing and speech-language pathology). An infusion-based approach is an option for institutions and standards-driven programs that do not have specific IPE/CP courses or open electives in their curriculum.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

In Student Hotspotting, interprofessional teams provide hands-on, individualized interventions to patients with high healthcare utilization to address underlying social determinants of health (such as education, economic stability, or neighborhood safety), promote interprofessional collaboration, and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions for patients with complex health and social needs.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Over the past few years, I've had the honor to represent Pathways to Housing PA in the interprofessional collaborative work with JCIPE on the project called ESHP (Enhancing Services for Homeless Populations). This partnership opportunity was as much exciting as it was needed. Many professionals in the healthcare field have the driving compassion and desire to improve someone's life; after all, staying healthy is one of the most important aspects of life. While many who choose to work in a health profession strive to deliver the best service, young healthcare professionals have very little practice and/or knowledge on how to …

Community participation can be an issue across all areas of life. What about when it applies to medical care? As the unique year that is 2020 comes to a close, it seems an appropriate moment to reflect back on Jefferson's history as a national leader in interprofessional practice and education, and to look forward to the future. This has been a year filled with transitions for me personally, and uniquely colored by the COVID-19 pandemic for us all.
