Never Too Early: Introducing Illness Scripts And Narrative Medicine As Foundational Clinical Approaches, Julia B. Frank, Seema Kakar, Gisela Butera, Thomas Harrod

Educational Challenge: The foundations course of our reformed, organ-based curriculum introduces clinical interviewing when students know little clinical medicine. An exercise that introduces the complementary concepts of “illness scripts” and “narrative medicine” helps them structure early encounters with patients. It provides a framework for organizing future clinical knowledge while reinforcing the humanistic values that may deteriorate over the course of students’ education.

Method: Students conduct and write up a semi-structured interview of someone they know with chronic illness. They reflect on their experience in pairs, and then analyze sample encounters in small groups with faculty facilitation.

The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) Hospice Immersion project was piloted in 2014 in southern Maine. It was designed and implemented as an experiential medical education learning model whereby medical students were “admitted” into the local Hospice Home to live there for 48 hours. Until this project, palliative and end of life care education at US Medical Schools and specifically UNECOM were accomplished through traditional medical education methods. Objectives: To describe the extent to which health sciences librarians are embedded into a program that gives medical students focused experiences in underserved international, rural, or inner city primary care settings.

Methods: Since 2009, librarians at a large urban research university have worked with a longitudinal program that gives medical students focused education and experience in underserved international, rural, or inner city primary care settings. Initially, the library offered a meeting space for the program and librarians led a class on library resources prior to students beginning work on a required capstone projects.
