Faculty Perceptions And Teaching Practices For Transformative Change: Culturally Responsive Teaching In Pharmacy Education, Nicole Rockich Winston

Cultural diversity training in pharmacy education has evolved from standalone lectures to longitudinal courses, service-learning initiatives, rotation experiences, and global health opportunities. This mixed methods study explored the perceptions, attitudes, and pedagogies of pharmacy educators who have incorporated culture diversity into their classrooms and clinic sites. First, 91 online surveys incorporating items from the Teaching Multicultural Attitudes Survey and the Multicultural Competency Teaching Scale were distributed to a random sample of pharmacy faculty who interface with cultural diversity. Background: Clinical empathy may be defined as "the ability to listen to, understand, sympathize with, and provide support to another individual." Empathy has been shown to influence patient satisfaction, adherence, and improve clinical outcomes. Teaching empathy skills in the classroom and clinical setting is imperative to allow students to develop and enhance their communication with patients.

Study Objective: To evaluate two empathy projects in the RX 618 Nutrition Support Professional Elective to identify if the projects are effective in improving pharmacy students' knowledge of empathy.
