Applied Health Sciences
Many applied science programs such as exercise science include prerequisite courses in the basic sciences to provide students with knowledge of foundational principles as well as provide transfer pathways from biology. However, when students begin exercise science coursework, their perceptions are that these courses should be easier, expecting lower effort and higher academic grades. These mismatched perceptions often lead to academic frustration. To determine the validity of the perceptions of high vs. low academic effort and academic …
Any Shape Or Form: An Online Module For Teaching Medical Students Citation Management In Residency Settings, Erica Heasley, Robyn Rosasco
Any Shape Or Form: An Online Module For Teaching Medical Students Citation Management In Residency Settings, Erica Heasley, Robyn Rosasco
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objective: To describe how the library’s online tutorial for medical students, “Introduction to Citation Management Tools,” was created and integrated into the College of Medicine’s Residency Preparation Boot Camp. Implemented in 2017, passing the tutorial is still a requirement for completing the boot camp.
Methods: In 2017, the Maguire Medical Library was asked by undergraduate and graduate medical education faculty to create a citation management tutorial for 4th-year medical students preparing to commence their respective residency programs. As part of the College of Medicine’s Residency Preparation Boot Camp, the tutorial needed to provide students with an overview of citation management …
New Graduate Orientation Evaluation: Are There Any Best Practices Out There?”, Jennifer Laflamme
New Graduate Orientation Evaluation: Are There Any Best Practices Out There?”, Jennifer Laflamme
2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium
In the current nursing shortage, a time when healthcare needs to get innovative with hiring and retaining new graduate nurses, orientation can be a factor in a new graduate’s decision to leave their place of employment. Efficient, cost effective, and safe orientations with clear expectations are necessary, including orientation evaluation. There is, however, little guidance in the literature on best practices for completing an orientation evaluation. Although scarce, innovations and evidence do exist, as do research opportunities, and those are discussed during this presentation. The purpose of this project was to describe, based on the literature, current evidence that seeks …

Electronic Cigarette Health Education Interventions, Kaitlyn Skryd
Electronic Cigarette Health Education Interventions, Kaitlyn Skryd
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Purpose: To determine the effective teaching strategies and interventions aimed at discontinuing the use of e-cigarettes amongst the adolescent population. This information would be useful to community health experts, healthcare providers, teachers (especially health educators), and parents.
Research Question: Will education interventions from health care providers regarding the harmful health effects of electronic cigarettes to American adolescents (aged 10-19) impact the incidence of everyday e-cigarette smokers?
Research Design: An integrative literature review was used to determine the most effective educational approaches to use towards reducing e-cigarette use in the adolescent population.
The Influence Of Nurse Image On The Future Of Nursing, Alexandra Armada
The Influence Of Nurse Image On The Future Of Nursing, Alexandra Armada
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Nurse image as perceived by society is outdated, inaccurate, and leads to the lack of interest in pursuing the profession. Contributing factors to this lack of interest in nursing could be explored by researching what resources are available to prospective nurses.
Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to explore the implications that current overall nurse image (NI) has on the future of the nursing profession, by analyzing existing resources available to prospective nurses.
Methods: This integrative literature review utilized the matrix method by Judith Garrard to organize and synthesize the data. A data comparison of the data …
Assessment In The Interpersonal Domain: Experiences From Empathy Assessment In Medical Education, Neville Chiavaroli
Assessment In The Interpersonal Domain: Experiences From Empathy Assessment In Medical Education, Neville Chiavaroli
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
Frameworks for the teaching and assessment of 21st-century skills commonly recognise the importance of learning and skill development in the interpersonal domain. They also usually acknowledge the challenge of reliably and validly assessing students in this domain. In the field of medical education and in selecting students for medical courses, the concept of empathy has become central to representing the particular interpersonal understandings and skills expected of students and practising doctors. Attempts to assess these attributes during medical training are just as challenging as in school contexts. This presentation draws on several years’ experience of working with medical educators to …
