Medicine is a vocation of perpetual independent learning; long-term success is critically dependent on finding the right resources and establishing effective study methods and test-taking strategies. Students who struggle with the academic transition in medical school have common risk factors and characteristics. We highlight key resources that are available for struggling medical students with an emphasis on West Virginia's HELP, ASPIRE, and STAT programs.

Revolutionary advances in understanding mental disorders and in providing novel treatments have enhanced the expectations of patients and relatives. There is a growing demand on newer research in providing interventions that allow patients to live a normal life. Of late, concept of the illness itself has undergone significant change. It is now proposed that expected outcome from treatment of mental disorder is to achieve a state of ‚ ‘wellness.’ Positive psychiatry is a newer branch of psychological medicine that seeks to promote understanding of wellness and examines its application in intervention and prevention of mental disorders. The concept of positive …

How Useful Is Youtube In Learning Heart Anatomy?, Athanasios Raikos, Pasan Waidyasekara

Athanasios Raikos

Nowadays more and more modern medical degree programs focus on self-directed and problem-based learning. That requires students to search for high quality and easy to retrieve online resources. YouTube is an emerging platform for learning human anatomy due to easy access and being a free service. The purpose of this study is to make a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the available human heart anatomy videos on YouTube. Using the search engine of the platform we searched for relevant videos using various keywords. Videos with irrelevant content, animal tissue, non-English language, no sound, duplicates, and physiology focused were excluded from …

The Role Of Trust In Creating Sustainable Change Through Interorganizational Collaborations In Health Care Education, Renee Devries

Renée (DeVries) Broughten

The sectors of higher education and health care are experiencing increased calls for accountability regarding their outcomes and affordability.  The elevated scrutiny and superimposed fiscal constraints create an opportunity for growth and redesign.  Partnerships and collaborations have emerged as one approach to addressing challenges in both arenas.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of trust on the success of collaborations between institutions of higher education in the health care arena.  A multiple case-study design is used to examine three partnerships created through the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) CAM Practitioner Research Education Project …

Expert–Novice Differences In Mental Models Of Viruses, Vaccines, And The Causes Of Infectious Disease, Benjamin D. Jee, David H. Uttal, Amy N. Spiegel, Judy Diamond

Amy N. Spiegel

Humans are exposed to viruses everywhere they live, play, and work. Yet people’s beliefs about viruses may be confused or inaccurate, potentially impairing their understanding of scientific information. This study used semi-structured interviews to examine people’s beliefs about viruses, vaccines, and the causes of infectious disease. We compared people at different levels of science expertise: middle school students, teachers, and professional virologists. The virologists described more entities involved in microbiological processes, how these entities behaved, and why. Quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed distinctions in the cognitive organization of several concepts, including infection and vaccination. For example, some students and teachers …

Adapting The Mcmaster-Ottawa Scale And Developing Behavioral Anchors For Assessing Performance In An Interprofessional Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter, Désirée Lie, Win May, Regina Richter-Lagha, Christopher Forest, Yvonne Banzali, Kevin Lohenry May 2015

Adapting The Mcmaster-Ottawa Scale And Developing Behavioral Anchors For Assessing Performance In An Interprofessional Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter, Désirée Lie, Win May, Regina Richter-Lagha, Christopher Forest, Yvonne Banzali, Kevin Lohenry

Christopher Forest

Background: Current scales for interprofessional team performance do not provide adequate behavioral anchors for performance evaluation. The Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter (TOSCE) provides an opportunity to adapt and develop an existing scale for this purpose. We aimed to test the feasibility of using a retooled scale to rate performance in a standardized patient encounter and to assess faculty ability to accurately rate both individual students and teams.
Methods: The 9-point McMaster-Ottawa Scale developed for a TOSCE was converted to a 3-point scale with behavioral anchors. Students from four professions were trained a priori to perform in teams …

Nephrology : Encouraging Self-Study Among Patients Of Non-Medical Scientific Professionals, Chuen-Tat Kang Feb 2015

Nephrology : Encouraging Self-Study Among Patients Of Non-Medical Scientific Professionals, Chuen-Tat Kang

Kang Chuen Tat (江俊达)

Medical journals are seldom touched by the scientific professionals that worked in non-related field of study. However, using nephrological journals to solve the health issues independently may be rare without relying on medical doctors and professionals that charge very high cost of medical consultation. For those patients potentially have been affected by renal diseases particularly related to diabetic nephrology, then it is recommended to assist oneself by taking additional initiatives to understand more about the health problem by summarising the content of independent nephrological research as below, not only able assist the patient affected but also helping the nephrology professionals …

Determining The Quality Of Assessment Items In Collaborations: Aspects To Discuss To Reach Agreement Developed By The Australian Medical Assessment Collaboration, Lambert Schuwirth, Jacob Pearce Feb 2015

Determining The Quality Of Assessment Items In Collaborations: Aspects To Discuss To Reach Agreement Developed By The Australian Medical Assessment Collaboration, Lambert Schuwirth, Jacob Pearce

Dr Jacob Pearce

The Australian Medical Assessment Collaboration (AMAC) project, funded by the Office of Learning and Teaching, seeks to provide an infrastructure and a road map to support collaboration between Australian medical schools in matters of assessment. This may not seem very new perhaps, because there are already several collaborations taking place in Australia, and, typically, they relate to joint item banks, (such as the IDEAL consortium), or joint test administration, (such as the International Foundation of Medicine tests). The AMAC project seeks to build on these existing collaborations in two ways: first, by tying these initiatives together and thus bundling the …

Association Between Applications Scores And Positive Onsite Interviews Of Pharmacy Residency Applicants, Sarah Nisly, Meredith L. Howard, Alex N. Issacs, Tate Trujillo Feb 2015

Association Between Applications Scores And Positive Onsite Interviews Of Pharmacy Residency Applicants, Sarah Nisly, Meredith L. Howard, Alex N. Issacs, Tate Trujillo

Sarah A. Nisly

Application to pharmacy residency programs has become increasingly competitive over the past several years. Although successful candidates must excel in the various stages of the application process, preparing written applications and securing onsite interviews are early and arguably the most difficult steps. Residency programs vary in the criteria used for offering onsite interviews. The majority of insight into this topic comes from surveys of residency program directors, but corresponding analyses of interview offers have been minimal...
