PURPOSE: Application of low intensity electric fields to interfere with tumor growth is being increasingly recognized as a promising new cancer treatment modality. Intratumoral modulation therapy (IMT) is a developing technology that uses multiple electrodes implanted within or adjacent tumor regions to deliver electric fields to treat cancer. In this study, the determination of optimal IMT parameters was cast as a mathematical optimization problem, and electrode configurations, programming, optimization, and maximum treatable tumor size were evaluated in the simplest and easiest to understand spherical tumor model. The establishment of electrode placement and programming rules to maximize electric field tumor coverage …

Dynamic Light Scattering Optical Coherence Tomography To Probe Motion Of Subcellular Scatterers., Nico J J Arezza, Marjan Razani, Michael C Kolios

Medical Biophysics Publications

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used to provide anatomical information of biological systems but can also provide functional information by characterizing the motion of intracellular structures. Dynamic light scattering OCT was performed on intact, control MCF-7 breast cancer cells and cells either treated with paclitaxel to induce apoptosis or deprived of nutrients to induce oncosis. Autocorrelations (ACs) of the temporal fluctuations of OCT intensity signals demonstrate a significant decrease in decorrelation time after 24 h in both the paclitaxel-treated and nutrient-deprived cell groups but no significant differences between the two groups. The acquired ACs were then used as input for …

Three-Dimensional Segmentation Of Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Carotid Atherosclerosis Using Sparse Field Level Sets., E Ukwatta, J Yuan, D Buchanan, B Chiu, J Awad, W Qiu, G Parraga, A Fenster May 2013

Three-Dimensional Segmentation Of Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Carotid Atherosclerosis Using Sparse Field Level Sets., E Ukwatta, J Yuan, D Buchanan, B Chiu, J Awad, W Qiu, G Parraga, A Fenster

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) vessel wall volume (VWV) provides a 3D measurement of carotid artery wall remodeling and atherosclerotic plaque and is sensitive to temporal changes of carotid plaque burden. Unfortunately, although 3DUS VWV provides many advantages compared to measurements of arterial wall thickening or plaque alone, it is still not widely used in research or clinical practice because of the inordinate amount of time required to train observers and to generate 3DUS VWV measurements. In this regard, semiautomated methods for segmentation of the carotid media-adventitia boundary (MAB) and the lumen-intima boundary (LIB) would greatly improve the time to train …

Medical Physics Staffing For Radiation Oncology: A Decade Of Experience In Ontario, Canada., Jerry J. Battista Dr., Brenda G Clark, Michael S Patterson, Luc Beaulieu, Michael B Sharpe, L John Schreiner, Miller S Macpherson, Jacob Van Dyk Jan 2012

Medical Physics Staffing For Radiation Oncology: A Decade Of Experience In Ontario, Canada., Jerry J. Battista Dr., Brenda G Clark, Michael S Patterson, Luc Beaulieu, Michael B Sharpe, L John Schreiner, Miller S Macpherson, Jacob Van Dyk

The January 2010 articles in The New York Times generated intense focus on patient safety in radiation treatment, with physics staffing identified frequently as a critical factor for consistent quality assurance. The purpose of this work is to review our experience with medical physics staffing, and to propose a transparent and flexible staffing algorithm for general use. Guided by documented times required per routine procedure, we have developed a robust algorithm to estimate physics staffing needs according to center-specific workload for medical physicists and associated support staff, in a manner we believe is adaptable to an evolving radiotherapy practice. We …

Schedule For Ct Image Guidance In Treating Prostate Cancer With Helical Tomotherapy., G Beldjoudi, S Yartsev, G Bauman, Jerry J. Battista Dr., Jacob Van Dyk

Oncology Publications

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of reducing the number of image guidance sessions and patient-specific target margins on the dose distribution in the treatment of prostate cancer with helical tomotherapy. 20 patients with prostate cancer who were treated with helical tomotherapy using daily megavoltage CT (MVCT) imaging before treatment served as the study population. The average geometric shifts applied for set-up corrections, as a result of co-registration of MVCT and planning kilovoltage CT studies over an increasing number of image guidance sessions, were determined. Simulation of the consequences of various imaging scenarios on the dose …

Nonrigid Registration Of Three-Dimensional Ultrasound And Magnetic Resonance Images Of The Carotid Arteries, Nuwan D Nanayakkara, Bernard Chiu, Abbas Samani, J David Spence, Jagath Samarabandu, Grace Parraga, Aaron Fenster Feb 2009

Nonrigid Registration Of Three-Dimensional Ultrasound And Magnetic Resonance Images Of The Carotid Arteries, Nuwan D Nanayakkara, Bernard Chiu, Abbas Samani, J David Spence, Jagath Samarabandu, Grace Parraga, Aaron Fenster

Atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation can result in cerebral emboli, which in turn can block the blood supply to the brain causing ischemic strokes. Noninvasive imaging tools that better characterize arterial wall, and atherosclerotic plaque structure and composition may help to determine the factors which lead to the development of unstable lesions, and identify patients at risk of plaque disruption and stroke. Carotid magnetic resonance (MR) imaging allows for the characterization of carotid vessel wall and plaque composition, the characterization of normal and pathological arterial wall, the quantification of plaque size, and the detection of plaque integrity. On the other …

Mapping And Quantifying Hyperpolarized 3he Magnetic Resonance Imaging Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Gradients, Andrea Evans, David G Mccormack, Giles Santyr, Grace Parraga

Medical Biophysics Publications

We measured hyperpolarized 3He magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) and quantified ADC gradients in each three-by-three voxel region of interest (ROI). Such local ADC gradients can be represented in vector maps showing the magnitude (|G3x3|) and direction of ADC gradients, providing a qualitative visualization tool and quantitative measurement of airway and air space heterogeneity. Twenty-four subjects (15 male, mean age=67+/-7 yr) with global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease (GOLD) stage II (n=9, mean age 68+/-6 yr), GOLD stage III chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; n=7, mean age 67+/-8 yr), and age-matched healthy volunteers (n=8, mean age …

Quality Assurance Of Radiation Therapy Planning Systems: Current Status And Remaining Challenges., Jacob Van Dyk May 2008

Quality Assurance Of Radiation Therapy Planning Systems: Current Status And Remaining Challenges., Jacob Van Dyk

Oncology Publications

Computerized radiation therapy planning systems (RTPSs) are pivotal for treatment planning. The acceptance, commissioning, and quality control of RTPSs are uniquely complex and are described in the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group Report 53 (1998) and International Atomic Energy Agency Technical Report Series No. 430 (2004). The International Atomic Energy Agency also developed a document and data package for use by vendors and purchasers to aid with acceptance testing of RTPSs. This document is based on International Electrotechnical Commission standard 62083 (2000) and describes both "type" tests to be performed in the factory and "site" tests to …
