Dissertations
Purpose
The purpose of this feasibility study is to determine the magnitude of effect using a combination of weekly weights and an online registered dietician to control excessive gestational weight gain in pregnant women with obesity using a pilot randomized controlled trial.
Specific Aims
There are three specific aims. Aim 1: Describe the study population in terms of sociodemographic influences (e.g., ethnicity, age, weight, and height) and obstetrical influences (i.e., parity and pregnancy weight). Aim 2: Measure participant satisfaction with the study interventions of weekly weighing and online nutrition counselling. Aim 3: (a) Explore the differences in gestational weight …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety
A meta-analysis of 10 randomized control studies published in 2003-2013 was conducted to provide a summary of the effects of exercise interventions on obese adolescents. Outcomes of the reviewed trials included body mass index, weight, glucose, and triglycerides. Data were combined using an inverse variance weighted random effects model. The effect size estimate for BMI was 1.354 kg/m2 (p < 0.001, SE 0.321), indicating that the BMI of individuals in treatment groups improved, as compared to control groups. A statistically significant reduction in weight was greater in the intervention groups than the control groups by 3.815 kg (p = 0.001, SE 1.101). The findings of this meta-analysis show that exercise interventions may improve control of weight and BMI and in turn be a factor in decreasing obesity.

Factors Associated With Abnormal Weights In Infants In The First Year Of Life: Results From The 2010 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, Nikaela R. Larossa
Honors Scholar Theses
Purpose: To examine the predictors associated with abnormal infant weights for lengths in the first year of life as seen in ambulatory care settings.
Data Sources: A secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2010 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), in which practitioners documented single patient visits. World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts and recommendations were used to evaluate infant weight for length. Of the total visits, 603 infants were less than one year old, and 595 infants were within the length range of the WHO growth charts. Of the 595 cases, 13.6% were underweight, 5.5% were overweight, 41.2% …
