Quiet Time On Family Maternity Center, Deanna Conley, Shelbie Clement
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Background: A stay at the hospital is full of interruptions from family visitors, lab draws, hearing screens, nurses and doctors, social workers, and environmental services. All these interruptions during the postpartum stay negatively affect parents and newborns by interrupting breastfeeding, sleep, and family bonding time. Evidence from AWHONN (Association of Women's Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) research, in the articles referenced, demonstrates overwhelming support of Quiet Time in the Postpartum period. Quiet Time has been shown to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates, decrease emotional and physical exhaustion, enhance shared decision making and set realistic expectations, increase nurse satisfaction, decrease nursing stress …

Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background:
Extrauterine Growth Restriction (EUGR) has been defined as infant weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) of less than -1.28 standard deviations (SD), at discharge or 36–40 weeks (about 9 months) postmenstrual age. In 2018, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition published indicators of neonatal malnutrition, including a decline in WAZ over time. Mild, moderate, and severe neonatal malnutrition is defined as a WAZ decline of 0.8-1.2 SD; >1.2-2 SD; >2 SD, respectively, and it is unclear how widely revised neonatal malnutrition indicators are being used.
Purpose/aim:
To investigate the sensitivity and specificity …
Effective Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Interventions Among Neonates: An Integrative Research Review, Staci Shaw
Effective Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Interventions Among Neonates: An Integrative Research Review, Staci Shaw
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background:
Newborns encounter many painful events, including heel sticks, venous blood sampling, peripheral intravenous insertions, and more. Newborns cannot verbally express pain, and caregivers rely on changes in vital signs (increased heart rate, decreased oxygen saturations) behavior (long periods of inconsolable crying), and facial expressions to grade newborn pain. Pain management in neonates is critical to preserve neurodevelopment. Due to adverse effects of pharmacological pain management interventions in neonatal populations, non-pharmacological pain management interventions are often utilized in newborns, such as swaddling, non-nutritive sucking, kangaroo care, oral sucrose, holding, touching, music, and breastfeeding. However, the most effective pain management intervention, …

Background:
Childbirth is very painful, and unmanaged pain may reduce patient satisfaction or lead to other complications. Evidence indicates that pain severity is lower among parturient women administered analgesia via a continuous labor epidural (CLE) and that maternal request is sufficient indication for CLE placement to manage labor pain. In some cases, a medical induction of labor may be scheduled, offering an opportunity for proactive pain management from hospital staff. Yet, trends on timing of CLE placement among parturient women with scheduled labor induction versus spontaneous labor in hospitals in Eastern Washington at one health system are unclear.
Purpose:

2021 Providence Nurse Research Conference
Background: In early 2020, the appearance of the novel COVID-19 virus became a global concern, infecting hundreds of thousands of people. To reduce the spread of the virus, the United States government instituted social distancing and required hospitals to take steps to create extra beds for patient with COVID. One method to increase hospital capacity was the cancellation of scheduled, elective surgeries. In one large pediatric hospital in the Pacific Northwest, there was no formal process in place for cancelling elective procedures or for prioritizing when or how to reschedule the case. Because nurses were being called on to provide …

Employed Mothers’ Satisfaction With The Breastfeeding Provisions In The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act In Two Northwestern U.S. Hospitals, Rebecca Penders
2021 Providence Nurse Research Conference
Background: Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition. Many workplace barriers to lactation exist for mothers returning to work after the birth of an infant. In 2010 the Breastfeeding Provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (BP-PPACA) was enacted as the first federal breastfeeding law which outlined specifically break time and a place to pump for businesses with over 50 employees who employed hourly wage workers. There is little known about the satisfaction of hospital employees pumping/lactation experience after the BP-PPACA.
Purpose/Aims: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which employed mothers' …

Objective: The aim of this IRB approved study was to evaluate the impact of ibuprofen on Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) in the immediate postpartum period of women with preeclampsia.
Design: A retrospective chart audit of 633 preeclampsia patients who had treated severe hypertension (BP > 160/105) during their hospital stay.
Setting: Metropolitan Level 3 facility in Portland OR.
Patients/Participants: 169 patients met criteria; received magnesium sulfate postpartum and had severe hypertension postpartum. 60 were randomly selected, 30 received ibuprofen, 30 did not.
Methods: Baseline was obtained at 2 hours postpartum. Each patients MAP for each 24 hour interval were …
