Identification Of Micrornas In The Follicular And Luteal Tissues Of Holstein-Friesian Cows, Selçuk Özdemi̇r, Seli̇m Çomakli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate many physiological pathways, including development, cell differentiation, immune response as well as diseases by post-transcriptional processes. However, information is limited regarding the biological roles of miRNAs in the development of the follicular and luteal tissues in cows. The main aim of the present study was to identify miRNAs that are expressed in the follicular and luteal tissues of cows. We used a comparative RNA sequencing method to identify miRNA candidates that might play key roles in the follicular and luteal phases of Holstein cows. Nine miRNAs were expressed at a high ratio: 8 in the follicular tissue …

Evaluation Of Serum Enzyme Activities And Protein Fractions In Brucella-Infected Cows, Mohamed Fahmy Abou Elazab

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to evaluate potential changes in serum enzyme activities and protein fractions in Brucella-infected cows. A total of 1100 serum samples of dairy cows were screened for Brucella infection using the Rose Bengal test (RBT). Serum samples reacting positively to the RBT were subjected to indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for confirmation. Thirty serum samples from serologically positive cows and 30 from negative (healthy) cows were analyzed for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activities and total protein (TP) concentrations and serum protein …

Comparing Levels Of Certain Heavy Metals And Minerals And Antioxidativemetabolism In Cows Raised Near And Away From Highways*, Hüsametti̇n Eki̇ci̇, Özkan Şi̇mşek, Şevket Arikan, Meryem Eren, Bayram Güner

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The scope of this study was to investigate the concentrations of certain heavy metals, mineral levels, and antioxidative metabolism in cows raised near (300 m) and away from highways (2.5 km) in Çankırı Province. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 100 cows (aged 3-5 years) raised near and away from highways in this province. Concentrations of certain heavy metals and minerals in the serum were analyzed on an ICP-MS device. Additionally, lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) in the plasma and antioxidative defense system indicators, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, were measured with a spectrophotometer. As …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Mastitis is recognized as one of the most important diseases affecting the dairy industry. The antibiotic susceptibility test is important to achieve accurate treatment in subclinical mastitis. This study was conducted to determine the presence of contagious mastitis agents (Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus) in 270 bovine milk samples collected from 132 dairy cows with subclinical mastitis in 15 different dairy farms located in the Marmara Region of Turkey. A total of 256 bacterial pathogens were isolated, of which 25 isolates were identified as S. agalactiae and 12 isolates were identified as S. aureus. Antibiotic susceptibilities of the isolates were …

A Study Of Somatic Cell Counts In The Milk Of Holstein-Friesian Cows Managed In Mediterranean Climatic Conditions, Atakan Koç Jan 2008

A Study Of Somatic Cell Counts In The Milk Of Holstein-Friesian Cows Managed In Mediterranean Climatic Conditions, Atakan Koç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Somatic cell counts (SCC) in the milk of Holstein-Friesian (HF) cows were determined by direct microscopic SCC technique. For a two-year period, milk samples were collected monthly from buckets during the morning and evening milkings at 4 different dairy farms. In total, 1,464 SCC readings from 88 HF cows were analyzed by using repeated measures. Herd, lactation month, parity, milking time, and herd interaction effects on SCC were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The average SCC in milk per herd was between 296,483 and 688,811 cells/ml. SCC in milk increased as parity increased. The average SCC in milk from evening milking was about 83,165 cells/ml higher than from morning milking. Improving milking management, reducing stress, providing extra care during the first month of lactation, and milking at a uniform interval will help to decrease SCC in milk and the prevalence of mastitis.
