Objective. To examine the influence of anxious/depressed scores on cardiovascular risk factors throughout childhood.

Methods. Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study, a study of 2900 pregnancies recruited between 1989 and 1991, were used. Anxious-depressed scores (derived from the Childhood Behavior Checklist), body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure were measured at 5 (n=1681), 8 (n=1697), 10 (n=1575) and 14 (n=1386) years. At age 14 depressive symptom scores (Beck Depression Inventory for Youth), anxious-depressed scores (Youth Self-Report (YSR) and Teacher Report Form (TRF)) and fasting lipid, glucose and insulin were also available. Cross sectional and longitudinal analyses were conducted. …

Assessment Of Motor Functioning In The Preschool Period, Jan Piek, Beth P. Hands, Melissa Licari Jan 2012

Assessment Of Motor Functioning In The Preschool Period, Jan Piek, Beth P. Hands, Melissa Licari

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The assessment of motor functioning in young children has become increasingly important in recent years with the acknowledgement that motor impairment is linked with cognitive, language, social and emotional difficulties. However, there is no one gold standard assessment tool to investigate motor ability in children. The aim of the current paper was to discuss the issues related to the assessment of motor ability in young pre-school children and to provide guidelines on the best approach for motor assessment. The paper discusses the maturational changes in brain development at the preschool level in relation to motor ability. Other issues include sex …

Aims: Lifestyle behaviours established during adolescence may adversely affect blood pressure (BP) and contribute to gender differences in cardiovascular risk in adulthood. We aimed to assess the association of health behaviours with BP in adolescents, using data from the Western Australian Pregnancy (Raine) Study.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis on 1248 Raine Study adolescents aged 17 years, to examine associations between lifestyle factors and BP.

Results: Boys had 8.97 mmHg higher systolic BP, as compared with girls. The 30% of girls using oral contraceptives (OC) had 3.27 and 1.74 mmHg higher systolic and diastolic BP, respectively, compared with non-users. Alcohol consumption in …

The Role Of Ubiquitin Ligases In The Control Of Organ Specific Autoimmunity, Gerard F. Hoyne Jan 2012

The Role Of Ubiquitin Ligases In The Control Of Organ Specific Autoimmunity, Gerard F. Hoyne

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia caused by a deficiency in insulin action, insulin secretion or both. Type 1 diabetes is classified as the destruction of beta cells leading to a deficiency in insulin production. Type1 diabetes accounts for 5-10% of patients with diabetes and most commonly is caused by the autoimmune destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas. The adaptive immune system is composed of antigen specific T and B lymphocytes which play a central role in protecting the human body from infectious pathogens but occasionally autoreactive T and B cells can escape immune tolerance, become activated …

The Role Of Notch Receptors And Ligands In Regulation Of Immune Responses, Gerard F. Hoyne Jan 2012

The Role Of Notch Receptors And Ligands In Regulation Of Immune Responses, Gerard F. Hoyne

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Notch signalling has an important role in the immune system in directing cell fate decisions in a range of diverse cell types. We are beginning to obtain a better understanding of the roles that the different Notch ligands and receptors play in both cellular differentiation of precursor cells and the regulation of immune responses by mature lymphocytes in the periphery. This review will examine the key findings that have emerged in relation to function of Notch in differentiation of T cells, B cells and dendritic cells and how modulation of Notch signalling seems to have potential for therapeutic applications in …

How Fundamental Are Fundamental Movement Skills?, Beth P. Hands

If you take the time to observe children playing in a playground you will notice some whose movements are fluid and graceful, who clearly experience the joy of successful movement and feel confident in their actions. Look further and you may notice some less confident children who may be hovering on the sidelines, causing fights with their peers, sitting quietly by themselves on the verandah or even hidden away in the library reading a book. These children find participation in playground games and many other physical activities challenging, tiring and even embarrassing. They are worried they will miss a ball …
