Detection Of The Eaea Gene In Escherichia Coli From Chickens By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Ayşe Kiliç, Hasan Basri̇ Ertaş, Adi̇le Muz, Gökben Özbey, Hakan Kalender

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to isolate Escherichia coli from chickens and to determine the presence of the eaeA gene, a virulence factor detected in E. coli, in the isolates by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Different chicken organs were inoculated onto blood agar and biochemical tests were performed on the suspicious isolates. E. coli was isolated from 48% (48/100) of the samples. DNA was extracted from these isolates and was amplified by PCR, using a pair of primers derived from the eaeA (virulence) gene. In the agarose gel examination of PCR products, 48% (48/100) of the isolates were determined …

Relation Between Abdominal Fat And Serum Cholesterol, Triglycerides, And Lipoprotein Concentrations In Chicken Breeds, Hassan Hussein Musa, Guo H. Chen, Jin H. Cheng, Galal M. Yousif Jan 2007

Relation Between Abdominal Fat And Serum Cholesterol, Triglycerides, And Lipoprotein Concentrations In Chicken Breeds, Hassan Hussein Musa, Guo H. Chen, Jin H. Cheng, Galal M. Yousif

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to investigate the relation between abdominal fat and serum biochemical indices in chicken. In the study, 120 chickens at 12 weeks of age from Anka and Rugao breeds were used. They were reared under the same environment and management. Blood samples were taken, the serum was harvested by centrifugation, and then the total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were assayed using an enzymatic kit. Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were determined using the Friedwald equation. Chickens were slaughtered and the carcasses were dissected manually to estimate the abdominal fat weight. …

The Prevalence Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Various Sources In Kayseri, Turkey, And Molecular Analysis Of Isolated Strains By Pcr-Rflp, Fuat Aydin, K. Semi̇h Gümüşsoy, Tuba İça, Bülent Sümerkan, Duygu Eşel, Mehmet Akan, Ayşe Özdemi̇r Jan 2007

The Prevalence Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Various Sources In Kayseri, Turkey, And Molecular Analysis Of Isolated Strains By Pcr-Rflp, Fuat Aydin, K. Semi̇h Gümüşsoy, Tuba İça, Bülent Sümerkan, Duygu Eşel, Mehmet Akan, Ayşe Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to isolate, identify, and genotype Campylobacter jejuni from various sources in the province of Kayseri, Turkey. A total of 6667 samples consisting of 5167 human fecal swabs, 600 dog rectal swabs, 600 cattle gallbladders, and 300 chicken carcasses were examined. The samples were plated onto mCCDA (cefoperazone charcoal desoxycholate agar) agar. In order to identify C. jejuni, phenotypic tests and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) were performed. C. jejuni was isolated in 1.43%, 43.50%, 31.16%, and 56% of the human, dog, cattle, and chicken samples, respectively. Among the 690 C. jejuni strains that were isolated …

Immunohistochemical Expression Of Estrogen And Progesterone Receptors In Oviduct Adenocarcinomas In Laying Hens, M. Özgür Özyi̇ği̇t, Gürsel Sönmez Jan 2007

Immunohistochemical Expression Of Estrogen And Progesterone Receptors In Oviduct Adenocarcinomas In Laying Hens, M. Özgür Özyi̇ği̇t, Gürsel Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ERs and PRs, respectively) in oviduct adenocarcinomas in laying hens. In all, 32 oviduct adenocarcinomas (18 primary tumors and 14 intestinal metastases) from Babcock B-380 laying hens 16-18 months old were stained with commercially available monoclonal antibodies against mouse-anti-human ERs and mouse-anti-human PRs. In the microscopic examination, 13 tumors (7 oviduct adenocarcinomas and 6 intestinal metastases) stained positively for ERs and 12 tumors (4 oviduct adenocarcinomas and 8 intestinal metastases) gave a positive reaction to PR antibody. The staining pattern of the tumor cells with …

Evaluation Of Two Vaccination Schemes Using Live Vaccines Against Newcastle Disease In Chickens, Mansur-Ud-Din Ahmad, Mamoona Chaudhry, Muhammad Farooq Rai, Hamad Bin Rashid Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Two Vaccination Schemes Using Live Vaccines Against Newcastle Disease In Chickens, Mansur-Ud-Din Ahmad, Mamoona Chaudhry, Muhammad Farooq Rai, Hamad Bin Rashid

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The use of different types of Newcastle disease (ND) vaccine in different vaccination schemes has decreased the incidence of velogenic Newcastle disease (VND) in commercial poultry worldwide. In under-developed countries like Pakistan, these vaccination schemes are not successful due to free-range and backyard poultry production. This trial was conducted in 90 experimental chickens to develop an effective control against ND. The level of antibody response, detected by haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test, and the degree of protection against the virulent strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) were studied. The chickens were immunized with commercially available ND vaccines. In scheme A, primary vaccination …
