Resveratrol, Gentisic Acid, And Flaxseed Oil: Antioxidative Agents Against Hela Cell Proliferation, Carson Krefft, Drake Teal, Raida Sugule, Suhaylah Marty

This study examines how three dietary supplements—resveratrol, gentisic acid, and flaxseed oil—affect the growth of HeLa cells. Resveratrol was predicted to have a more significant inhibitory effect on HeLa cell proliferation than the other test substances. HeLa cells were expanded in T-25 flasks and treated in triplicate within 96 well plates with various supplement variables. The findings demonstrated that resveratrol promoted cell proliferation while gentisic acid and flaxseed oil treatment significantly reduced the viability of HeLa cells. Positive Staphylococcus aureus strains from CSP students were tested for methicillin resistance (MRSA) using the Kirby-bauer assay. Kirby-bauer assay technique was used to determine the sensitivity of staphylococcus aureus bacteria against oxacillin. MRSA infection is the result of a bacteria that has built resistance against the antibiotics used to treat staph infections. The results of this experiment concludes that majority of the strains tested are methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA).

Research students from the Concordia University, St. Paul Science Department has collected over 1,000 nasal swabs over the past 5 years in an attempt to characterize nasal isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from healthy individuals. S. aureus is a common commensal bacterium found on the skin, in the nares, or in the vaginal tract of approximately 30% of the population. While S. aureus is typically harmless when it is growing in those areas, it can also pose a public health risk as it can act as an opportunistic pathogen to cause a variety of infections, such as toxic shock syndrome.
