The purpose of this study was to precisely locate, in living humans, a myofascial trigger point associated with the upper portion of the trapezius muscle (TrP1) that refers pain to the head and neck and to determine if this point is associated with anatomical structures. This study is descriptive and utilizes data from measurements of the location of TrP1 in relation to anatomical landmarks, of pressure sensitivity overlying the trigger point and electromyography recordings in localizing the trigger point. Several animal models have been proposed to develop pulpal inflammation. Procedures recommended in these models have many variables and have not produced consistent results. The purpose of this study was to create pulpal inflammation using the Nd:YAG laser.

Forty-five cuspids of 12-18 month old beagle dogs were lased at 5, 7.5, and 10 watts (W) for 20 seconds with a 600 micron contact probe. Five cuspids were not lased but were used as controls. Diabetic neuropathy consists of not one, but many patterns of nerve injury, each potentially with its own discrete pathogenic mechanisms. Low level lead (Pb²⁺) exposure may produce lasting deficits in learning and memory by altering calcium (Ca²⁺) dependent processes. Isolated presynaptic nerve terminals from rat hippocampus were loaded with the intracellular (Ca²⁺) indicator Fura-2. The changes in cytoplasmic free calcium ([Ca²⁺]_i) were measured by stopped-flow fluorescence spectroscopy following depolarization with elevated potassium on a millisecond time scale (Lentzner et al., 1992). The purpose of this study was to examine in vitro plaque formation on sealant coated enamel. The plaque growth on different types of sealants placed on enamel was compared to each other and to an unsealed enamel control. The antimicrobial properties of sealants were also studied.

Sealant coated bovine enamel disks were immersed in a S. mutans culture medium for four days. The amount of bacterial plaque formation was quantified by removing the deposit, suspending it in solution with subsequent serial dilution. Elevated serum cholesterol has repeatedly been associated with endothelial dysfunction as demonstrated by impaired vasoreactivity to vasodilating stimuli.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the resorbable membrane Guidor™ and the osteogenic protein hOP-1 on hard tissue healing following periradicular surgery in cats.

Surgical endodontic therapy was performed on the maxillary canine teeth of twelve cats. After orthograde root canal therapy, flap reflection, osteotomy, resection of the root end, root end cavity preparation and the placement of a root end filling, eight of the surgical sites were treated with Guidor™ and eight with hOP-1. The remaining eight sites received no further treatment and served as controls.

The objective of this study was to evaluate bone and cementum regeneration in the critical size, supraalveolar, periodontal defect model following surgical implantation of recombinant human transforming growth factor beta-1 (rhTGFß-1) in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Five male beagle dogs were used in a split-mouth design. Alternate jaw quadrants in consecutive animals received GTR with rhTGFß-1 in a resorbable calcium carbonate carrier. Contralateral jaw quadrants received GTR with carrier only (control). The healing interval was 4 weeks. The purpose of this study was to determine if the analytical results (when determining cadmium, lead, and zinc concentrations) for air sample filters prepared and analyzed according to N:OSH Method 7300, differ significantly, from those obtained when the instrument is calibrated using EPA Method 200.7 acid matrix standards. The osteoinductive potential (osteoinductivity) is a very important aspect of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a biomaterial. This study is directed at establishing qualitative and quantitative assays of the osteoinductivity of human DBM. Further aspects of this study include an assessment of the effects of the production process, matrix characterization, and donor related factors on osteoinductivity of the DBM.

Athymic mice were chosen as the animal model for use in the in vivo bioassay. The most prevalent life-threatening disease worldwide, secondary to coronary artery thrombosis is Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). Increases in three clinical markers have been explored as an early means of AMI detection: Cardiac myoglobin, and the two specific cardiac isoforms of Creatine Kinase, CK-MM and CK-MB. However, myoglobin levels have shown to give a more accurate correlation (R = 0.89) than does Creatine Kinase evaluation. Therefore, we have developed a two-site Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) using monoclonal antibodies against myoglobin isolated from human heart tissue. Studies of high and low risk populations have suggested several nutrients to be protective or hazardous against CHD. Most published work since 1984 on diet and CHD in the Adventist Health Study (AHS) population examined either foods or food groups. This study investigated ten nutrients as exposure variables and their relationship to CHD risk. Water aerobics is one mode of exercise that is gaining popularity. Water aerobics allows adults who participate in an exercise program to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine if water aerobic training is as effective as land dance aerobic training in improving cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary healthy adults. Eighteen subjects participated in this study; nine in dance aerobics and nine in water aerobics. The (3)H-tetracycline bone labeling procedure was employed to monitor bone resorption from urinary loss curves in male and female rats of various ages. In addition, whole body dry skeletal mass and the loss of (3)H-tetracycline from individual bones was determined. It was found that the dry skeletal mass/body mass ratio of 24-week-old females was 30-40% greater than that for males. The urinary loss of (3)H-tetracycline was described by a double exponential equation indicating the presence of two distinct and independent exchangeable bone compartments. The pigment cell-specific expression of tyrosinase and TRP1 has been shown to be important for the production of melanin in pigmented cells. Using a pigmented cell line, B16 mouse melanoma, we obtained evidence that PKC plays a major role in regulating melanogenesis. Chronic treatment with phorbol dibutyrate (PDBu) leads to downregulation of PKC activity and protein levels. This is accompanied by a loss of pigmentation which is correlated with a 50% reduction and a complete loss of TRP1 and tyrosinase respectively. Similar results were obtained with Northern and Western blotting indicating that PKC may regulate the steady state levels of …

The purpose of this study was to examine the activity of the internal obliques (upper abdominals) versus the external obliques (lower abdominals) during a modified version of Kendall's upper and lower abdominal strength tests using surface electromyography on adults. The study was not correlated to Kendall's theory due to the necessity to have the internal oblique electrode placed on the anterior abdomen. Twenty-four women and sixteen men participated in the study. All subjects were taught two positions ("easy" and "hard") for both abdominal tests and performed eight trials. Artificial fertilization protocols have been developed which bypass natural barriers for reproduction. One aspect of infertility which has received little attention is the potential importance of aneuploidy in sperm. To more clearly understand the cytogenetic make-up of sperm from OAT patients, multi-probe, multi-color FISH was performed to determine aneuploidy.

The introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has revolutionized protocols used in in vitro fertilization centers. The pregnancies resulting from ICSI suggest an increased frequency of sex chromosome aneuploidy in livebirths. Preliminary data by others' suggest that sperm tail swelling patterns following hypo-osmotic swelling (HOST) can be predictive of fertilizing ability. …
