The decapod crustacean with a relatively well-defined visual system have contributed significantly to our understanding of visual neuron morphology and physiology. The general morphology of the optic lobes of several decapods were initially described by Parker (1897) and Hanstrom (1924). In the past few years, several light and electron microscope studies have been made on the lamina ganglionaris: the first optic ganglion, of the lobster (Hamori and Horridge, 1966a); the crayfish (Hafner, 1974; Nassel, 1976a), and the crab (Stowe et al., 1977; Rafuse et al., in preparation). Analysis Of The Potentials And Topographical Relations Between The Olfactory Bulb And Prepyriform Cortex, William S. Seibly

Olfactory bulb efferents sweep caudally over the prepyriform cortex in a broad fiber sheet called the lateral olfactory tract (LOT). The LOT begins as a compact sheet of fibers in the olfactory peduncle and narrows to a bundle caudally. It is the primary axonal pathway between the olfactory bulb and the cortex. The shape and cross-sectional area of the LOT was measured from histologic sections. The cross-sectional area diminishes to about half from rostral to caudal measurements. Expansion of the maxillae is a well recognized procedure in orthodontics. Little is known about Mandibular Expansion. This project is a pure research of the possibility of expanding the mandible laterally at the symphysis on a baboon.

The symphysis was cut A-P and expanded laterally 11 mm, then held and stabilized with a titanium mesh work screwed to the inferior border of the mandible. The defect area was filled with a bone graft of marrow and cancellous bone fragments taken from the greater trochanter and the crest of the ilium. Preparations used in this study were obtained from an investigation which had undertaken the following:

Durapatite, a hydroxylapatite ceramic was implanted in 24 mature Beagle dogs to study its maintenance effect on the alveolar bone of the mandible.

After dividing the dogs into two groups, a fresh socket and a healed socket group, the posterior teeth were removed and alveolectomies were performed. Eight ceramic implants were then placed in the right mandible of each animal in each group. The healed group received the implants five weeks after tooth removal and the fresh socket group received implants immediately after extraction.

Plasma samples were obtained from seven hypertriglyceridemic (>150 mg/dl) chronic renal failure patients before and after regular hemodialysis. The effect of the plasma on the lipolytic activity of bovine milk lipoprotein lipase was investigated. The lipoprotein lipase activity, as measured by release of C14-labeled free fatty acid from triglyceride, was decreased 8-67% when incubated with uremic plasma as compared to the control plasma (44 mg/dl triglyceride). The inhibition noted prior to hemodialysis did not appear to be alleviated by the dialysis but subsequent treatment with an isolated ultrafiltration technique did appear to remove an inhibitory substance as …

The Effect Of Periapical Inflammation On Cellular Cementum : A Scanning Electron Microscope Study, Gary S. Yonemoto

The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the morphologic changes that occur in cellular cementum exposed to periapical inflammation.

Ten single rooted human teeth were collected. There were five specimens of normal cellular cementum and five specimens of diseased cellular cementum, which had been exposed to periapical inflammation. Each specimen was fractured longitudinally through the apical foramen, leaving the organic component intact. The cross-sectional morphology of cellular cementum was then examined using an ARM Model 1000 scanning electron microscope. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry was also conducted on samples representative of the two test groups.

Despite extensive clinical and experimental investigations of venous thrombosis, relatively little is known about the early phases of healing of the venous thrombus. Soon after its discovery heparin has become the most popular agent for the prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis, but there are a number of unanswered questions regarding the most satisfactory treatment for venous thrombosis.

One area of controversy has been the duration of anticoagulation therapy for acute venous thrombosis. If the anticoagulant is discontinued too soon, the thrombus may continue to propagate. Prolonged anticoagulant therapy exposes the patient to the risk of serious hemorrhage. The objective …
