Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory process of the pancreas, which can remain localized at the level of the gland or can extend to the peripancreatic and retroperitoneal tissues. The use and interpretation of paraclinical examinations at the onset can predict the form of evolution of acute pancreatitis (mild or severe). Depending on the evolution, these data are useful in determining the type of surgical intervention that might be necessary based on severity.

Infectious aortitis is an uncommon but life-threatening cause of aortitis. Given the lack of specific symptoms, establishing the diagnosis is often a challenge. When it is associated with an endovascular infection, such as infective endocarditis, blood cultures may be diagnostic although often limited by low positive predictive value. Imaging studies may reveal characteristic findings, with computerized tomography angiography being the most sensitive. Management includes prompt initiation of antimicrobial therapy followed by surgical intervention, keeping in mind that operative mortality is high due to weakened arterial wall integrity. This study aims to determine the frequency of perioperative hypertension and its types (pre, intra and post-operative) hypertension in patients admitted for surgical procedures. This was a cross-sectional study conducted between the years 2012-2013 at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Patients admitted for any surgical procedure during this time were included. Perioperative hypertension has been defined as systolic blood pressure of >140 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure of >90 mm Hg or whose blood pressure increased by 20% during surgery. A ventricular septal defect (VSD) patch infection with Acremonium species isolated from vegetation and blood culture is described. Antifungal treatment was discontinued after 3 months and patient developed relapse. Surgery with prolonged oral voriconazole was instituted with recovery. We emphasize importance of surgery and prolonged therapy to treat such infections.

We evaluated the American College of Surgeon’s National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) to describe current hospital-based epidemiologic frequency, survival, and patterns of care of pediatric medulloblastoma. We analyzed NCDB 1998–2011 data on medulloblastoma for children ages 0–19 years using logistic and poisson regression, Kaplan–Meier survival estimates, and Cox proportional hazards models. 3647 cases of medulloblastoma in those aged 0–19 years were identified. Chemotherapy was received by 79 and 74% received radiation, with 65% receiving both therapies. Those who received radiation were more likely to be older than four, while those who received chemotherapy were more likely to be age four …
