Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

A 36-year-old Mexican immigrant male presented to an outside hospital after being found down in a sugarcane field. On initial presentation he was febrile to 104.7, hypotensive with a GCS of 3. He soon had an episode of emesis, with new onset seizure activity. He was refractory to fluid resuscitation, started on pressors and intubated before being transferred to UMC. Blood cultures drawn and returned positive for Brucella. While being one of the most common zoonotic diseases worldwide, Brucella infections are reported 100 to 200 times annually in the United States. Typically, Brucellosis presents with malaise, fever, night sweats and …

Antibody Titers Against Sars-Cov-2 Omicron Variant B.1.1.529 And Subvariant Ba.2 Following Vaccination, Brendan Tate, Amber Trauth, Alistair Ramsay, Michael Hagensee

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant B.1.1.529 and subvariant BA.2 were first detected in late 2021. The Omicron variant quickly became the most widespread in the United States due to its increased transmissibility compared to previous SARS-CoV-2 variants. The BA.2 sub-lineage has been shown to be particularly communicable and was the most prevalent strain in the United States as of March 2022. It is unknown if this increased infectivity of BA.2 is due to depressed antibody quantities following vaccination against wild-type virus or previous infection with other strains of SARSCoV-2. The goal of this study is …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of New Graduate Nurses During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Julie Youn Aug 2022

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of New Graduate Nurses During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Julie Youn

2022 Southern California Nursing Research Conference

Background

New graduate nurses (NGNs) in acute care settings are particularly vulnerable to the stressors inherent in nursing, due to the immense amount of experiential learning required at the bedside during the first year of practice. The high amount of stress experienced by NGNs is reflected in high turnover rates. Nurses with less than two years of experience accounted for almost half (47.5%) of all nurse turnovers in 2019. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much physical and emotional turmoil in the nursing profession due to the increased workload and emotional distress. However, there are limited studies exploring the experiences …

Podium Presentation: Relationships Between Nursing Stress And Perceived Importance Of Access To Chaplains During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Teresa Bigand, Adam Gaines, Sheila Doucette, Danell Stengem, Rachel Freedberg, Jamie Roney, Rosemary Timmerman

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Hospital chaplains are trained to provide spiritual support to inpatients, family members, and support persons across the continuum of care. Patients receiving a chaplain visit during their hospital stay report higher satisfaction, quality of life, and spiritual well-being. Chaplain consultation during hospitalization is related to higher rates of hospice enrollment and lower rates of in-hospital deaths. Additionally, evidence suggests nurses who are employed in hospitals with staff chaplains report lower stress and compassion fatigue based on frequency of interactions with chaplains during worked shifts. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital nurses providing front-line care report higher stress levels compared to …

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

Occupational burnout, a symptom of chronic work-related stress, can lead to negative health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, insomnia, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Burnout also augments negative occupational risks such as increased sick days, decreased productivity, disability claims, and turnover. Nurses working in the hospital setting report high levels of work-related stress and burnout related to patient acuity levels and short staffing, and rates have further worsened in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of the virus brought multiple hospital surges, greatly increasing nursing workload as patient acuity climbed and simultaneously, national nurse …

Podium Presentation: Or Nurses Psychological Well-Being And Redeployment During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Joy Lanfranchi, Trisha Saul, Ross Bindler

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operating Room (OR) nurses were redeployed to patient care units during times of maximal surge capacity in hospitals caring for patients with the novel coronavirus. Hospital bed and staffing needs caused hospitals to cancel elective surgeries, allowing for conservation of bed space and nurses to accommodate the patient influx. Despite the highly specialized nature and skill set of OR nursing, OR nurses were expected to function in traditional patient care roles, where levels of self-assessed competence vary based on experience and training. There is a paucity of literature on the psychological impact of redeployment of …

Podium Presentation: Differences In Exercise Patterns Among Day And Night Shift Nurses During Covid-19 Surges, Randy Sanoff, Teresa Bigand, Elena Crooks, Katie Carroll, Mary Halabi

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits. Yet, some research suggests that number of steps taken per week decreased and time spent sedentary increased during the first year of the onset of COVID-19 compared to the year prior. Among nurses working full-time …

A Case Of Intracranial Empyema After Bacterial Sinusitis, Eric Doane, Bhumi Shah, Robert Belfer May 2022

A Case Of Intracranial Empyema After Bacterial Sinusitis, Eric Doane, Bhumi Shah, Robert Belfer

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Acute sinusitis in the pediatric population is a common presentation in the emergency department. Most cases are viral and can be managed conservatively and will resolve spontaneously in 7-10 days. Even in cases of bacterial sinusitis, patients can typically be discharged with oral antibiotics and close follow up with the pediatrician.

There is however a small subset of patients who will develop a rare lethal complication, an intracranial empyema. While the incidence in the developed world has decreased as antibiotics become more available, it is still estimated to occur in up to 5% of severe cases requiring hospitalization (1) . …

Improving Antibiotic Durations For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections In Pediatric Urgent Care Clinics, Megan Hamner May 2022

Improving Antibiotic Durations For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections In Pediatric Urgent Care Clinics, Megan Hamner

Research Days

Watch recording of live event

Problem Statement/Question: Although national guidelines recommend 5-7 days of oral antibiotics for most skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), in 2019, CMH urgent care clinics (UCCs) prescribed > 7-day courses for 42% of patients diagnosed with SSTIs. Prolonged antibiotic courses result in increased patient burden, cost and adverse events which could be prevented by prescribing shorter courses.

Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): To increase the percentage of patients receiving 5- 7 days of oral antibiotics for SSTIs from 58% to 75% by December 31st, 2021, in CMH UCCs.

Methods (include PDSA cycles): We formed a multidisciplinary team …

Maternal Antepartum Administration Of Lactoferrin Ameliorates Neonatal Infection By Bacteremia-Producing Escherichia Coli In Mice, Charity Dunlop May 2022

Maternal Antepartum Administration Of Lactoferrin Ameliorates Neonatal Infection By Bacteremia-Producing Escherichia Coli In Mice, Charity Dunlop

Research Days

Background: E. coli is a major cause of neonatal sepsis. Vaginal pathogenic E. coli strains ascend into the pregnant uterus infecting the offspring of colonized mothers. Lactoferrin (LF) is an antibacterial and immunomodulatory glycoprotein that has been given to preterm newborns to prevent lateonset sepsis. However, the effects of maternal LF administration to prevent neonatal E. coli invasive infection have not been studied.

Objectives/Goal: Our goal was to test the hypothesis that LF pre-treatment of pregnant mice administered prenatally will significantly reduce the bacterial load in their embryos following infection with E. coli.

Methods/Design: Human LF 100 mcg/mL or placebo …

Repeat Tracheal Aspirates In Pediatric Intensive Care Patients: Understanding Clinical Application, Edward Lyon May 2022

Repeat Tracheal Aspirates In Pediatric Intensive Care Patients: Understanding Clinical Application, Edward Lyon

Research Days

Background: Tracheal aspirate cultures (TA) are regularly obtained in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) when clinical changes in intubated or tracheostomy dependent children occur. Positive TA results are often unable to distinguish infection from colonization. There is no data describing the frequency and impact of repeated TAs on patients in the PICU.

Goal: Our objectives were to describe the frequency of repeated TAs in PICU children and emergence of multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO), identify bacterial profile of TAs, and examine antibiotic prescribing patterns related to these cultures.

Methods: A retrospective chart review occurred on 15 patients in the PICU …

A Project Proposal: The Effects Of Standard Protocols During Cpr On Hospital-Acquired Infections Of Post-Open-Heart Surgery Patients In The Cvicu, Jessica Monahan

Symposium of Student Scholars

Abstract

A Project Proposal: The Effects of Standard Protocols during CPR on Hospital-Acquired Infections of Post-Open-Heart Surgery Patients in the CVICU

Background: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are one of the most common complications post-cardiac surgeries and are associated with longer hospitalizations, elevated use of healthcare resources, and increased morbidity and mortality. The effects of HAIs after cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in recent post-open-heart surgery patients remains largely unexplored. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to determine, in the CVICU does implementing standard protocols during CPR on recent post-open-heart surgery patients reduce HAIs?

Literature Review: HAIs during CPR can be acquired through …

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Prevention And Detection In Covid-19 Patients, Bethany Sloane Melega Apr 2022

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Prevention And Detection In Covid-19 Patients, Bethany Sloane Melega

Student Scholar Showcase

COVID-19 has impacts on patient health beyond the hospital. The trauma that patients, and families of patients, can experience during an admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) can last long after discharge from the ICU and the hospital in general. The psychological and physical impacts of ICU hospitalization can cause patients to experience Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). PICS is the culmination of symptoms that persist after a critical illness that involve all aspects of a patient’s physical and mental well-being and can significantly affect family life and increase recovery time. Due to the strict personal-protective equipment (PPE) usage …
