Background:
Hospital chaplains are trained to provide spiritual support to inpatients, family members, and support persons across the continuum of care. Patients receiving a chaplain visit during their hospital stay report higher satisfaction, quality of life, and spiritual well-being. Chaplain consultation during hospitalization is related to higher rates of hospice enrollment and lower rates of in-hospital deaths. Additionally, evidence suggests nurses who are employed in hospitals with staff chaplains report lower stress and compassion fatigue based on frequency of interactions with chaplains during worked shifts. Background:
Occupational burnout, a symptom of chronic work-related stress, can lead to negative health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, insomnia, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Burnout also augments negative occupational risks such as increased sick days, decreased productivity, disability claims, and turnover. Nurses working in the hospital setting report high levels of work-related stress and burnout related to patient acuity levels and short staffing, and rates have further worsened in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operating Room (OR) nurses were redeployed to patient care units during times of maximal surge capacity in hospitals caring for patients with the novel coronavirus. Hospital bed and staffing needs caused hospitals to cancel elective surgeries, allowing for conservation of bed space and nurses to accommodate the patient influx. Despite the highly specialized nature and skill set of OR nursing, OR nurses were expected to function in traditional patient care roles, where levels of self-assessed competence vary based on experience and training. Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits. Yet, some research suggests that number of steps taken per week decreased and time spent sedentary increased during the first year of the onset of COVID-19 compared to the year prior.
