The critical need for students to learn to be effective members of interprofessional teams in preparation for collaborative practice-ready care provision now and in the future has been well documented1. There are increasing opportunities for students to observe interprofessional events to assist them in doing so, but often their role is passive and the teams may not demonstrate the highest level of patient-centered care, minimizing the student learning.

A recent review of pre-qualifying interprofessional education in the UK reported the practical challenges of synchronising interprofessional education1. Whilst it was noted that online interprofessional courses were developed primarily to overcome timetabling conflicts of students and clinicians from various health professions, it was recognised that a blended learning approach with appropriate student support could enable an effective interprofessional education experience with lower running costs and reduced disruption. It was found, however, that despite the ubiquity of e-learning in interprofessional education there seemed to be less sharing than expected1.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) Grand Rounds is an innovative student-run initiative designed specifically to increase the clinical relevance of IPE for all health professions students. By creating new opportunities for students from medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, couple and family therapy, physician assistant and pharmacy to interact with health professionals who are actively participating in interprofessional work environments, the IPE Grand Rounds program allows students to develop a more complete picture of what it means to be a member of a collaborative practice team. Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Earlier this year, members of the medical intensive care unit (MICU) attended an interprofessional workshop that utilized Awakening/Breathing/Choice of Sedation/Delirium/Early Mobility (ABCDE) bundle simulation combined with TeamSTEPPS training to empower care givers to advocate for patient safety while optimizing patient care. The ABCDE bundle is an evidence-based tool designed to implement pain, agitation, and delirium guideline recommendations into routine practice. To further improve patient safety and outcomes and build upon the ABCDE concept, the MICU team developed an interprofession-al practice project by adding routine assessment of need for indwelling Foley catheters to their daily work list, creating the “ABCDEF” bundle.

Background: Use of mobile health (mHealth) tools has expanded rapidly but little research has been done on its acceptability by low-income, diverse, older patient populations.

Objective: To assess the attitudes of a diverse group of underserved women on the acceptability and usability of mHealth tools in a clinical setting using a breast health questionnaire application (app) at a public hospital mammography clinic.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in a breast-imaging center of an urban safety net institution from July-August 2012. Interviews included pre- and post-questions. Women completed the Athena breast health questionnaire app on an iPad and were asked about …

Abstract

As many as half of older people that are admitted to nursing homes (NHs) are incontinent of urine and/or feces. Not much is known about the rate of cure of incontinence present at NH admission, but available reports suggest the rate is low. There have been racial and ethnic disparities in incontinence treatment, but the role of disparities in the cure of incontinence is understudied. Using the Peters-Belson method and multilevel predictors, our findings showed that there were disparities in the time to cure of incontinence for Hispanic NH admissions. The goal of this project was to create a tool that provides students at Minnesota State University, Mankato with mental health information through a freely available smartphone application (App). Our approach used a software engineering design process that focused on who our customers are, what resources are available, and how we can best connect the two to improve student lives. Creating health equity and eliminating health disparities are considered national priorities for improving the health of Americans (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). Health disparities are a primary public health concern, yet are complex phenomena and challenging to research (Harper & Lynch, 2005). Objective. To design a faculty-guided international elective Advanced Pharmacy Practice Expereince (APPE) in partnership with a medical relief organization. To expose students to pharmacy-related opportunities in non-traditional settings focused on an indigent population, while obtaining a global perspective on healthcare.

Methods. The College of Pharmacy partnered with an international medical relief organization utilizing their resources for trip planning and in-country logistics to provide a framework for a pharmacy student rotation. Community-Campus Partnership Effectiveness For Nursing Faculty Curricula In Rural Virginia, Adriana Myers

Nursing schools state that faculty shortages caused by low faculty salaries are a primary reason for nursing shortages. In a Shenandoah University graduate survey, many nurses wanted to teach but could not leave their higher-paying clinical jobs. Shenandoah University’s Graduate Program in Winchester, VA received funding from the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority to use rural community-campus partnerships to plan a nursing faculty residency program to increase the number of nursing faculty. The program’s planning partners were economic development, business, academic, and philanthropic organization leaders in seven rural planning districts.
