Training In The Use Of Interpretive Services For Patients With Limited English Proficiency, Kristina Wooten
Training In The Use Of Interpretive Services For Patients With Limited English Proficiency, Kristina Wooten
Symposium of Student Scholars
In clinical settings, there is a disconnect between health care professionals (HCPs) and patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). HCPs rely on ad hoc interpreters to communicate with patients with LEP (e.g. nurses using untrained friends and family or nursing students to interpret care information). Refusing to use or misusing professional interpreters and other interpretive services may lead patients with LEP to avoid seeking necessary care, misunderstand their diagnoses and treatment regimens, and fail to return for follow-up care. This increases the already existing health care disparity between patients who speak English and patients with LEP. Studies show that if …
High Anxiety In Pediatric Oncology Patients? What About Art Therapy?, Rebekah Love
High Anxiety In Pediatric Oncology Patients? What About Art Therapy?, Rebekah Love
Symposium of Student Scholars
Anxiety and depression are becoming more prevalent in the pediatric population today. In addition to the general pediatric population experiencing an increased risk of mental illness, children with an oncology related diagnosis have an even heightened risk. Most pediatric oncology patients reported fear or worry daily, which is cited to be most severe when they had an appointment or went to the hospital for a fever. It is imperative we discover interventions to lessen the anxiety and depression pediatric oncology patients experience daily. A literature review revealed conclusive interventions have not been determined. The purpose of this research is to …
Alternative Precautionary Measures Yielding Lower C. Diff Infection Rates In Healthcare Facilities, Matthew Kramer
Alternative Precautionary Measures Yielding Lower C. Diff Infection Rates In Healthcare Facilities, Matthew Kramer
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: An international healthcare concern is the persistent spread of Clostridium difficile, a Gram-positive spore forming bacterium that is responsible for the most common hospital-acquired infection, amongst patients.
Objective: A systematic review was performed to summarize evidence that the interventions utilized in healthcare facilities which indicate a patient’s precautionary status are insufficient, outdated, and commonly lead to infection in neighboring patient rooms. Databases such as PubMed, NCBI, Google Scholar, and APHA’s Medical Care were searched, covering the period from 2017-2022. Studies were included if their focus concentrated on C. diff and the precautionary measures taken by employees at healthcare …

DO PRE- AND POST-SHIFT HUDDLE STRETCHING EXERCISES REDUCE CHRONIC LOWER BACK PAIN AMONG NURSES AND CNAS OVER A THREE- TO SIX-MONTH PERIOD?
Abstract
Many nurses and care partners develop job-related chronic lower back pain due to constantly repositioning immobile patients, changing linens, and bathing patients. These strenuous job requirements involve bending and lifting, as well as standing for extended periods of time during long shifts. This proposal will investigate the effectiveness of a targeted, thirty-second stretching session incorporated into each shift change huddle, for employees beginning their shift as well as employees ending their shift, on reports of lower back …
The Effects Of Prenatal Patient Education Regarding Epidural Anesthesia, Auburn Merritt
The Effects Of Prenatal Patient Education Regarding Epidural Anesthesia, Auburn Merritt
Symposium of Student Scholars
This project is important because there is a lack of education for prenatal women regarding epidural anesthesia which causes misunderstanding, confusion, a deficit of knowledge, and a lack of support. The purpose of this project is to analyze and suggest the importance of proper education regarding epidural anesthesia. Proper prenatal education causes resolution of misconceptions as well as causes patients to be more satisfied with their pain management during labor. Evidence that I found suggested that after proper education more pregnant women planned to receive epidural anesthesia (Cutajar, 2018). Women preferred detailed education to increase knowledge of the risks and …
Men In Nursing: Implications For The Profession And Broader Workforce Trends, David K. Palmer, Nancy Stuart, Michelle Fleig-Palmer
Men In Nursing: Implications For The Profession And Broader Workforce Trends, David K. Palmer, Nancy Stuart, Michelle Fleig-Palmer
Mountain Plains Business Conference
Typically, nursing has been considered a gendered profession dominated by women. As traditionally blue-collar, male-dominated occupations such as assembly-line work have declined, the percentage of men in the nursing profession has increased to 12%. This is not a recent phenomenon;a significant percentage of men served as nurses up through the 1800’s.
In this analysis of men serving in the nursing workforce, we begin with a historical review and then discuss implications for the nursing profession, e.g., recruitment, education, practice, retention, and culture, as well as implications for the broader labor market, e.g., compensation trends by industry and gender

Improving Nurse Leaders' Transformational Leadership Skills In The Online Environment, Tanya Haight
Improving Nurse Leaders' Transformational Leadership Skills In The Online Environment, Tanya Haight
2022 Southern California Nursing Research Conference
Leadership is critical to the success of most organizations, and the achievement of an organization's goals is largely dependent on the leaders' ability to engage, motivate, and influence their teams—often referred to as Transformational Leadership. This is especially true for healthcare organizations wherein the morbidity and mortality of patients may be affected by the quality of leadership. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person meetings transitioned to the online format without nurse leaders' formal training. Leaders cited this lack of orientation as impeding their ability to sustain an online-virtual transformational leadership presence with their teams. They reported varying degrees …

Optimization Of Transfusion Administration Process: A Quality Improvement Project, Nannette Berg, Jennifer Togioka
2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference
BACKGROUND:
Transfusion of blood products (transfusion) occurs infrequently for most nurses yet is a high-risk procedure for patients. To ensure patient safety, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission (TJC) created regulatory standards for transfusion administration and documentation. To meet regulatory standards, transfusion events require documentation of all six critical steps and nurse leaders must monitor compliance with regulatory transfusion documentation, taking action when rates are suboptimal. Yet, transfusion documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) has been described as fragmented, confusing, and devoid of built-in prompts to facilitate completion. Checklists can organize tasks with multiple …
High Reliability Through Charge Nurse Huddles: Improving Communication To Decrease Absenteeism, Audra Ellis Overman
High Reliability Through Charge Nurse Huddles: Improving Communication To Decrease Absenteeism, Audra Ellis Overman
2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference
Abstract:
It is important we show staff we as leaders are listening to their concerns and frustrations. Lack of communication with immediate supervisor is a cause of absenteeism among nurses, and that absenteeism leads to decreased quality of care, disrupted work routines, and increased workload for staff that are present. Communication is a proven tool to help develop teamwork, reduce absenteeism, and manage conflicts. Staff commitment to the workplace can be increased by management working toward a democratic style of supervision with increased open communication to decrease staff absenteeism. Absence of or poor communication creates a negative work environment and …

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand
Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand
2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference
Background:
In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.
Purpose:

Integrated Primary Care Models are fast gaining popularity, and often being advocated as an important step in enhancing patient care within a primary care setting. Several studies have shown a positive impact of Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) intervention in terms of patient satisfaction, improvement in patient symptom scores and global mental functioning. However, additional studies are needed to assess if integrated behavioral health consultations can demonstrate measurable outcome improvements to quantify the benefits of this approach, related to some of the most commonly seen and treated medical diseases in a primary care setting. This study aims to measure three outcomes: …

With current medical advances, our patient population continues to age. This poses new challenges for healthcare practitioners to provide for elderly patients with complex and multifactorial medical needs. Particularly, this is a growing challenge in the emergency department (ED), where patients often present towards the last months of their lives. A study conducted by UCSF indicates 75% of patients in their last 6 month of life visited the ED. 56% to 99% of older adults do not have advance directives available at ED presentation. Therefore, ED visits towards the end of life is an opportune teaching moment for physicians to …

Return To Sport Following Closed Reduction Of Acute Traumatic Posterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocations: A Systematic Review, Seungkyu Park, Joseph Galvin, Matthew Nowak, Jordan Damschen
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Acute traumatic posterior sternoclavicular (SC) joint dislocation is a serious injury given its potential to cause cardiovascular and airway compromise that typically will require emergent closed reduction. Posterior SC joint dislocations are usually caused by a high energy mechanism. Typical treatment involves closed reduction followed by observation. There is limited data on the rate of return to sport following this injury pattern when treated in a closed fashion.

Over-prescription of pain medication has led to an opioid epidemic in the United States. Many factors can contribute to the amount of pain medication prescribed to patients. The amount of pain medication prescribed to patients is affected by many factors and previous research has shown:
- Men are prescribed more than women
- Whites more than non-whites
- English-speaking more than non-English-speaking
The goal of the study was to look at whether this held true in a pediatric orthopedic population. We also looked at the trends in opiate prescribing over time.

The case presented describes an advanced COPD patient with a history of progressive scoliotic curvature who presented multiple times with complaints of worsening respiratory symptoms. Thus, it is important to emphasize how the lack of meaningful patient communication and patient participation in the plan of care can lead to increased symptoms of anxiety, declining quality of life, and unnecessary medical testing. In addition, the case explores how applying a holistic combination of strategies including motivational interviewing, shared-decision making and proper communication can improve the level of patient care.

Does Simulation-Based Education For Cardiac Auscultation Improve Competency And Retention Rate Compared With Traditional Education?, Harrison Patrizio, Riley Phyu, Bum Kim, Nils V. Brolis
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Cardiac auscultation is a critical part of clinical examination. Stethoscope allows for early detection of numerous important cardiac pathologies and appropriate referral for further management. Improper use of stethoscopes leads to inappropriate referral resulting in unnecessary financial stress or a delay in proper treatment of time-sensitive pathologies like VSD in children. Multiple studies have documented that competency among medical professionals in cardiac auscultation skills is in steady decline and this is due to the ineffective teaching method of cardiac auscultation starting in medical school.
Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of simulated education in cardiac auscultation.

The Role Of Physiologic Vision Deficits In Elderly Self Dispensing Medication Errors, Harrison Patrizio
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Elderly populations are more prone to self-dispensing medication errors. Although some of these errors can be attributed to a patient’s disease, many errors are preventable with behavioral modification. As we age, the lens of the eye becomes yellow. This tints all light that passes through it causing deficits in color distinguishability.(Andreasen, 1980) Additionally, the lens of the eye hardens over time. This results in presbyopia, an inability to focus close objects.(Wolffsohn, 2018) These changes can cause elderly patients to misread labels or dispensed incorrect medication due to color shade similarities.(Cardarelli, 2011) Although these visual changes are well documented, current research …
