Relationship Between Nurse Managers’ Cultural Humility Practices And Nurse Retention, Jessica Scharfenberg

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Some hospital administrators experience yearly loss of human capital, resulting in economic and noneconomic consequences that require resource reallocation to sustain operations. Grounded in the cultural humility theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between nurses’ perceptions of their nurse managers’ (a) openness, (b) self-awareness, (c) egolessness, (d) self-reflection and critique, (e) supportive interaction, and nurse turnover intention. Participants included 142 registered nurses working in the Midwest United States. Data were collected using Foronda’s Cultural Humility Scale and the Michigan Organizational Assessment Questionnaire. Results of multiple regression analysis indicated the model could significantly predict …

Nurse Management Education To Improve Job Satisfaction And Nurse Retention, Motunrayo Omoloye Adegorusi Jan 2022

Nurse Management Education To Improve Job Satisfaction And Nurse Retention, Motunrayo Omoloye Adegorusi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract Nurses play a critical role as primary care providers in correctional facilities, as well as custodians of security. However, there is a significant disparity in the supply of nurses in correctional settings relative to other practice settings, which is a major gap in practice. The current problem arises from the inability to retain nurses in the correctional settings. Prisons have a harsh work environment characterized by a difficult patient population and stringent policies that govern operations. Additionally, a high level of bureaucracy impedes system reforms and transformations. The purpose of the DNP project was to find out if the …

Strategies For Retaining Nurses In Rural Healthcare Settings, Michelle Lee Pratt Yeater Jan 2022

Strategies For Retaining Nurses In Rural Healthcare Settings, Michelle Lee Pratt Yeater

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Rural healthcare leader deficiency in implementing successful strategies to retain nurses can deleteriously impact the quality of patient care and impede the organization's financial performance. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore successful nurse retention strategies used by rural healthcare leaders. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with eight pastoral healthcare leaders in the eastern region of the United States who improved nurse retention and a review of relevant supporting documentation from company websites. Coding was used for data analysis and theme determination. Three themes emerged: effective nurse retention incentives, meaningful relationships …

Strategies For Reducing Nurses' Turnover In Specialty Care Clinics, Lawrence Benjamin Jan 2019

Strategies For Reducing Nurses' Turnover In Specialty Care Clinics, Lawrence Benjamin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The nursing shortage and high turnover rates are a problem in Canada and the world over. The purpose of this single case study was to explore leadership strategies that nurse leaders in specialty care clinics in Canada use to reduce nurse turnover. The participants were 7 nurse leaders from a single organization with specialty care clinics across Canada who all had above average nurse retention rates when compared to the case organization's average nurse retention rate. The authentic leadership theory was the conceptual framework. Data sources for this study were company documents, participants' semistructured interview responses, member checking of the …

Patient Safety Problems, Procedures, And Systems Associated With Safety Reporting And Turnover, Grace Hilario Jan 2019

Patient Safety Problems, Procedures, And Systems Associated With Safety Reporting And Turnover, Grace Hilario

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research has shown that 400,000 people die every year due to preventable medical errors. Medical error reporting and safety is a responsibility of all members of a health care organization. Creating an environment that addresses and prevents potential or actual safety problems can help reduce the incidence of medical errors made by nurses in the workplace. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine if nurses' perceptions of safety problems and error-preventing procedures and systems affected their comfort in reporting safety problems and intent to leave. High-reliability theory was the theoretical foundation for this study. Data were obtained …

Relationship Between Self-Determination And Employee Retention, Tiffany Edwards

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Retention of registered nurses (RNs) is essential to the sustainability of quality health care services. More than 55% of hospitals in the United States have not translated retention initiatives into a formal retention strategy. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between training programs, new hire onboarding processes, frozen positions, and nurse retention. The self-determination theory was the theoretical framework for this study. Secondary data were collected from the 2016 Texas Hospital Nurse Staffing Survey. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results of the multiple linear regression were statistically significant, with F(3, 251) = .602, …
