Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes damage to the small intestine as a result of ingesting gluten. Approximately 1% of the U.S population has it, but individuals have a higher chance of getting the disease if they have the DQ2 gene or certain health problems. The ingestion of gluten or being on a gluten free diet can also cause additional health problems in the individual because they do not get enough vitamins and nutrients.
