Background/Significance: Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for 20-60% of U.S. bacterial pneumonia cases and has a mortality rate of 10-30%. Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) occurs when streptococcus pneumoniae invades otherwise sterile sites. Adherence to immunization guidelines is 60-70% effective at preventing IPD. Co-administration of pneumococcal and influenza vaccines has shown promise at increasing uptake of the pneumococcal vaccine and enhancing immunological response.
