Baseline data collection of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) was complete by December 2010. A cohort of 15,105 subjects has been followed up on incident events at six study sites for three years. The ELSA-Brasil is remarkable for its large sample size and wide variety of data collected to investigate biological and social determinants of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus in adults in Brazil. This paper reassessed in Brazil, the concept of "Medical ecology" i introduced in 1961 to describe the relationship and utilization of health care services by a given population. This was a cross-sectional telephone survey among a random sample of people enrolled in a private HMO. We interviewed a random sample of non-pregnant adults over age 18 using 10 questions about symptoms and health care use during the month prior to interview. The final sample consisted of 1,065 participants (mean age 68 years, 68% female). From this sample, 424 (39.8%) reported the presence of symptoms, 311 (29.2%) had a medical office …

Progress testing is a longitudinal tool for evaluating knowledge gains during the medical school years. Objectives: (1) To implement progress testing as a form of routine evaluation; (2) to verify whether cognitive gain is a continuous variable or not; and (3) to evaluate whether there is loss of knowledge relating to basic sciences in the final years of medical school. Methods: A progress test was applied twice a year to all students from 2001 to 2004.
