Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Diabetic foot is a severe complication of diabetes that occurs as a result of poor glycemic control, being associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Mortality associated with this disease is estimated at 5% in the first 12 months, and about 42% in the next 5 years. On average, it affects about 15% of people with diabetes during their lifetime, including as possible manifestations neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, and subsequent ulceration which, if treated incorrectly, can lead to amputation.

This paper presents a retrospective and descriptive study of patients diagnosed and treated for diabetic foot ulcers in the Proctoven Clinic. The …

Eating Disorders In Men: A Comprehensive Summary, Connor James Spratt, Liam Alexander Mackenzie Myles, Emanuele Maria Merlo

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Eating disorders (EDs) have detrimental effects on an individual’s physical and mental health, along with significant interpersonal, social and economic effects. Furthermore, men who are suffering with an ED face unique challenges with this. Men suffering with EDs have historically received little attention within ED research, diagnosis and intervention. However, the number of men suffering with these issues is significant and growing. Understanding of EDs tend to ignore male experiences, meaning many are left to suffer in silence until the ED has developed to a critical point. However, many now recognize the need to understand the issues facing men suffering …

The Efficacy Of Tailored Text Messages To Improve Medication Adherence And Lifestyle Changes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Vanessa B. Silverio May 2022

The Efficacy Of Tailored Text Messages To Improve Medication Adherence And Lifestyle Changes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Vanessa B. Silverio

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease characterized by increased amounts of glucose in the blood, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (United Health Foundation [UHF]), 2021). T2DM can be effectively treated with medication and behavioral lifestyle modifications. Even small improvements in glycemic control can reduce the risk for debilitating complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, sepsis, and retinopathy (Wang et al., 2021, Haider et al., 2019). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to identify the most effective intervention for improving medication adherence, lifestyle changes, and hemoglobin …

Back To The Basics With Smart Goals: A Multimodal Intervention For Adults Who Have Type 2 Diabetes, Alyssa L. Snyder May 2022

Back To The Basics With Smart Goals: A Multimodal Intervention For Adults Who Have Type 2 Diabetes, Alyssa L. Snyder

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Diabetes, the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020a) and the ninth leading cause of death worldwide (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020), has increased by 70% over the last two decades (WHO, 2020). Type 2 diabetes (T2D), the most prevalent type accounting for 90% to 95% of diagnosed cases (CDC, 2020a), affects individuals of all ages and often results in major health problems including stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. The purpose of this patient-centered, evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a multimodal intervention on hemoglobin …

Empower You: An Adult Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Management Program With Utilization Of A Mobile Phone Application, Kelsey Jahn May 2022

Empower You: An Adult Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Management Program With Utilization Of A Mobile Phone Application, Kelsey Jahn

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

In 2018, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes and there continues to be 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes every year (ADA, 2018). Due to this increasing prevalence, self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is essential to disease management. The PICOT question for this project was: In adults with T2DM with a hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) greater than 8% in a diabetes specialty clinic (P), what is the effect of a multimodal smartphone application (I) compared to prior nonuse of the application (C) on average blood glucose readings (O) over an 8-week period (T)? The project was completed in a large, …

Menopausal Symptoms: Prediction Of Quality Of Marital Relationship Among Couples, Noshi Iram Zaman, Sundas Shakoor, Shazia Yusuf

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Objective. The current study determined the association between menopausal symptoms and marital quality of life, and explored the role of several demographic variables (education, occupation, and income) on these symptoms. Materials and Methods. The purposive sample included 180 married couples. Wives experiencing premenopause, perimenopause, and postmenopause 35 to 60 years old (M=45.21 & SD=7.47) were recruited from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Two assessment instruments were used: Menopause Rating Scale- MRS for menopausal symptoms, and ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale- EMS for quality of marital relationship. Results. Wives’ quality of marital relationship was not significantly predicted by menopausal symptoms whereas husbands’ quality …

Up to the present date, according to the official reports of the World Health Organization (WHO), 205,338,159 patients have been confirmed with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and 4,333,094 have died as a consequence of this infectious disorder. The majority of COVID-19 patients will develop hematological, biochemical, immunological, hormonal and other complex alterations of their laboratory data which may be diagnosed using different biomarkers. In this paper, we review the alterations of the hematology, immunology, biochemistry, hormonal and other laboratory panels discovered in the subjects diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection, based on the available data in the literature.

The Involvement Of Oxidative Stress In Non-Hodgkin’S Lymphomas; A Review Of The Literature, Ramona Ingrid Corbeanu, Amelia Maria Găman

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Non-Hodgkin’s malignant lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies, characterized by a variety of clinical, morphological, histopathological, immuno-histochemical, molecular and evolutionary features. They represent a form of cancer that develops from the lymphatic tissue, as a result of the malignant transformation of B (85%) or T (15%) lymphocytes. Lymphomagenesis is described as a multi-stage process involving the mutation and proliferation of cell clones. Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance of cellular redox status caused by the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/ or by decreasing antioxidant systems that allows their accumulation in the cell. Small quantities of …
