Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a significant health issue, as it requires patients to perform daily self-management activities. One in every three Americans with Type 2 diabetes has limited or low health literacy skills. Limited or low health literacy skills can impact a patient’s overall health outcome; therefore, a critical element for disease management and patient adherence is health literacy. In light of the national nursing shortage, there is a heightened need to admit students to schools of nursing who are likely to persist through graduation. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to develop an understanding of how working as a nursing assistant impacts the ability of nursing students to meet the high demands of school during their junior year of a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure program. Preparing nursing students to transition into the professional registered nurse role is the task of nurse educators. These educators must train students to function in multiple nursing specialties post-graduation, to include critical care. As more nursing graduates enter into areas such as intensive care units and emergency rooms, nurse educators must prepare them to work with critically ill patients. Increased exposure to critical care clinical experiences and simulations may be one method to prepare them for these complex, high-acuity patient situations.
