Stroke mortality rates are higher in Brazil when compared to other countries. The city of Sao Paulo has a good system of mortality surveillance that allow us to describe the epidemiology of the stroke in the city. Our aim was to describe the stroke mortality pattern by gender and age characterizing the ischemic/hemorrhagic ratio. We categorized mortality data by gender and a 10-year age-strata from 30-39 years-old to 70-79 years-old. To avoid random variations, we calculated the mean of all deaths occurred during the period of 1997 to 2003. Mortality rates were calculated using the population from the Brazilian National …

Dr. Treena Orchard

This paper discusses the results of two ethnographic studies with female sex workers in rural areas of Karnataka and Rajasthan, India. In particular, we focus on women whose socio-economic status, and religious and occupational practices, are part of sex work systems that have historical precedents such that they can be termed “traditional” sex workers. The approach taken in the ethnographic work was informed by current critical approaches in medical anthropology and public health. The paper argues that in the context of an expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic in rural areas of India, understanding the historical and structural factors that operate to perpetuate …

Race And Sexual Identity: Perceptions About Medical Culture And Healthcare Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, David J. Malebranche, John L. Peterson, Robert E. Fullilove, Richard W. Stackhouse

David J Malebranche

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) in the United States are disproportionately affected by HIV. Using a qualitative approach, the authors describe the healthcare experiences of BMSM in New York State and Atlanta, GA, exploring the social issues that influence barriers to care, communication, and adherence in medical settings. Racial and sexual discrimination socially displace BMSM, and are often compounded by negative encounters within medical institutions. The internalization of these experiences influences healthcare utilization, HIV testing, communication, and adherence behaviors among members of this population. Increasing the number of ethnic and sexual minority providers, expanding current definitions of …
