The Role Of Mcl-1 In The Heart: Gateway From Life To Death, Xi Wang

MCL-1 is an essential BCL-2 family member that promotes the survival of multiple cellular lineages, but its role in cardiac muscle has remained unclear. Here, we have demonstrated that cardiac-specific ablation of Mcl-1 results in a rapidly fatal, dilated cardiomyopathy preceded by loss of myofibrils and cardiac contractility, abnormal mitochondria ultrastructure, defective mitochondrial respiration, and impaired autophagy. Genetic ablation of both pro-apoptotic effectors (Bax and Bak) could largely rescue the lethality and impaired cardiac function induced by Mcl-1 deletion. However, Mcl-1-, Bax-, and Bak-deficient hearts still revealed mitochondrial ultrastructural abnormalities and displayed deficient mitochondrial respiration, and are hypersensitive to chronic …

Heart failure patients face a five-year 50% mortality rate, due to impaired cardiac function and hypertrophy of the heart. Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Considering the established cardiovascular benefits of some probiotics, including reduction of cholesterol and hypertension, it was hypothesized that probiotics can improve outcomes of heart failure. Probiotics or controls were administered orally to an animal model for heart failure. Those receiving probiotics showed a significant improvement in cardiac hypertrophy and an attenuation of heart failure compared to control. No changes in gut microbial composition occurred. …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly half of the people diagnosed with heart failure (HF) die within 5 years of diagnosis. Brain abnormalities secondary to CVD have been observed in many discrete regions, including the hippocampus. Nearly 25% of patients with CVD also have major depressive disorder (MDD), and hippocampal dysfunction is a characteristic of both diseases. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with increased stress and alterations in metabolism, favoring catabolism over anabolism. Hormonal profiles of patients with heart failure have been assessed using serum and saliva as matrices, which are only point measurements and do not provide long-term information. Scalp hair is a novel matrix that allows for measurement of hormones over a period of several months. Abstract

Objectives:

  1. Determine demographic, physiologic, and laboratory characteristics at time of admission of the heart failure (HF) population in a regional acute care facility in Central Kentucky through review of patient electronic medical records.
  2. Determine which HF population characteristics are significantly associated with readmissions to the hospital.
  3. Provide identification of the statistically significant common characteristics of the HF population to this facility so that they may work towards development of an electronic risk for readmission predictive instrument.

Design: Retrospective chart review.

Setting: Regional acute care facility in Central Kentucky.
