Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) is a much-overlooked cancer with a mortality rate that has increased throughout recent years, as stated by the American Cancer Society [1]. In the United States alone, there are an estimated 8,000 adults being diagnosed with IHCC every year, with a five-year survival rate of 9% [2]. Chemotherapy options for the treatment of IHCC include systemic chemotherapy such as gemcitabine, capecitabine, and oxaliplatin. These medications carry a wide array of adverse factors that may warrant discontinuation due to the detriment to the well-being of the patient. Additionally, a broad field of therapy that may also be used, …

Predictors Of Improved Clinical Outcome Following Mechanical Thrombectomy On South Texas Patients With Posterior Circulation Stroke, Leslie M. Ocampo, Ameer E. Hassan

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

The South Texas population is well-acquainted with hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (DM2), and hyperlipidemia, all well-known risk factors for stroke1. Both anterior and posterior circulation strokes can lead to detrimental life changes, and although posterior circulation, or vertebrobasilar, strokes make up about 20% of all ischemic strokes2, their elusive characteristics often overlap with anterior circulation symptoms. In this study, we study factors that may influence the outcome of patients with posterior circulation stroke (PCS) following successful recanalization using mechanical thrombectomy. In this paper, the clinical outcome is evaluated by the primary endpoint, Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at discharge. The …

Potential Perioperative Complications Due To Differences in Timing Of Systemic Heparin Distribution During Ruptured Aneurysm Coiling

Introduction:

In general, systematic heparin anticoagulation is standard in regards to neurovascular intervention. When coiling ruptured aneurysms, many neurointerventionalists have their own protocol as to timing of systemic heparinization. There is ample research and literature reviewing the frequency of perioperative events, predictors and outcomes, as well as the efficacy in the use of anticoagulants and/or antiplatelets before, during, and after neurovascular procedures to prevent adverse outcomes. However, there currently exists a dearth of research in regards to timing of distribution of heparin intraoperatively and …

Background and Significance

The obesity epidemic is a growing public health concern. In addition to the already known complications and comorbidities associated with obesity, data suggest that obesity is an independent risk factor for the development of liver disease. 1,2 However, there is a paucity of data regarding the clinical correlation of obesity and cirrhosis in a predominantly Hispanic population. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of cirrhosis stratified by BMI in a predominately Hispanic population.

Materials and Methods

Role Of Tc-Ptp-Mediated Regulation Of Stat1 In Skin Carcinogenesis, Carson Bogatto, Dae Joon Kim Nov 2020

Role Of Tc-Ptp-Mediated Regulation Of Stat1 In Skin Carcinogenesis, Carson Bogatto, Dae Joon Kim

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

STAT1 has been shown to have tumor suppressive or protumorigenic roles in tissues in a context-dependent manner. In this study, we explored the role of TC-PTP in the regulation of STAT1 during skin tumor promotion. We found that the levels of the phosphorylated serine form of STAT1 were increased in TC-PTP overexpressing keratinocytes in response to TPA treatment. Additionally, TC-PTP overexpression decreased TPA-induced proliferation through regulation of STAT1 signaling. These results suggest that positive regulation of STAT1 signaling via TC-PTP can have a protective role towards keratinocytes during tumor promotion. These findings suggest that targeting TC-PTP-mediated regulation of STAT1 signaling …

Long Non-Coding Rna (Lncrna) As A New Biomarker For Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Hcc) Progression And Drug Resistance, Areeb Masood, Sanjaya Satapathy, Manish Tripathi

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignant liver tumor that commonly occurs as a progression of chronic liver inflammation due to long-standing viral hepatitis infection, toxins, metabolic conditions, and congenital disorders. In 2018, HCC was the 4th leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, accounting for approximately 780,000 deaths in total.

HCC’s prognosis is directly correlated with early detection. Unfortunately, HCC has an asymptomatic pattern of growth in the early stages of the disease which makes early detection challenging. When HCC progresses to advanced stages, it leaves clinicians with limited therapeutic and curative options, leading to high rates of morbidity and …
