Translating A Pediatric Weight Management Intervention Into Medically Underserved Areas, Caitlin Golden
Translating A Pediatric Weight Management Intervention Into Medically Underserved Areas, Caitlin Golden
Theses & Dissertations
Despite substantial prevention and treatment efforts, childhood obesity remains a pressing public health concern. Disparities persist in obesity prevalence among children of lower socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic minority groups, and those residing in rural areas. The vast majority of efficacious pediatric weight management interventions (PWMIs) have been based in larger cities and urban areas delivered through inter-disciplinary teams in a hospital or medical center, and the degree to which these or other efficacious PWMIs have been translated to, and are feasible in, typical rural or micropolitan areas is unclear. This dissertation describes a dissemination strategy and a systematic approach …
Parental Engagement To Influence Child Nutrition Habits, Mariah Van Ardenne
Parental Engagement To Influence Child Nutrition Habits, Mariah Van Ardenne
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Brighter Bites Salinas is a non-profit agency whose mission is to create healthy communities through fresh food. They do this by providing nutrition education to children and delivering free, fresh produce to parents. In the United States, obesity and food insecurity are common, intertwined issues among children. The contributing factors to these entangled issues are associated with living in poverty, acculturation of minority groups, and negative parental influence. The consequences of this include increased risk of chronic diseases, high-cost treatments, and mental health issues. This capstone project was created to positively engage parents in nutrition education to influence their children’s …

International migration has economic and health implications. The acculturation process to the host country may be linked to childhood obesity. We use the Community Energy Balance (CEB) framework to analyze the relationship between migration and childhood obesity in Mexican households with international migrants. Using longitudinal data from the Mexican Family Life Survey (MxFLS), we examine how migrant networks affect childhood obesity in origin communities. We also review binational health programs that could be effective at tackling childhood obesity in migrant households from Mexico. Children embedded in migrant networks are at greater risk of developing overweight or obesity, suggesting a significant …

Progress has been made in the development and widespread implementation of effective interventions to address childhood obesity, yet important challenges remain. To understand how the United States and Latin American countries achieved success in implementing obesity policies and programs (PAPs) and identify improvement opportunities using implementation science principles. We identified three comparative case studies: (1) front-of-food package labeling (Mexico and Chile); (2) Open Streets/play streets (Colombia and the United States); and (3) the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (Brazil and the United States). Information from multiple sources (e.g., scientific and gray literature and key informant interviews) was synthesized to describe barriers, facilitators, …
Parents As Agents Of Change In The Treatment Of Childhood Obesity And The Promotion Of Children's Health Behaviours, Kristen C. Reilly
Parents As Agents Of Change In The Treatment Of Childhood Obesity And The Promotion Of Children's Health Behaviours, Kristen C. Reilly
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The overarching purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the role of parents as agents of change in the treatment of childhood obesity and the promotion of children’s health behaviours. In order to achieve this purpose, four studies were conducted. The purpose of Study 1 was to explore parents’ perceptions of nutritional literacy, as well as their needs for nutritional literacy information, supports, and resources at familial and community levels. Next, Study 2 described the theoretical components and model used in the development and implementation of a parent-focused childhood overweight and obesity intervention (i.e., C.H.A.M.P. Families). The purpose of Study …

The Impacts Of Childhood Obesity On Adult Health And Quality Of Life, Miriam Weinstock
The Impacts Of Childhood Obesity On Adult Health And Quality Of Life, Miriam Weinstock
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Obesity has emerged as one of the most preeminent concerns of the modern era. Thirty six percent of our country’s citizens are classified as obese and six percent qualify as extremely obese. Developing obesity as an adult is fairly common, but countless studies have shown a direct correlation between childhood obesity and remaining severely overweight as an adult. Aside from the physical and aesthetic discomfort of maintaining superfluous girth, the health hazards threatening the obese population are extremely discomfiting. The enormity of the issue requires extensive study so that society can educate themselves of the dangers and how to prevent …
Improving Provider Adherence To Guidelines In Addressing Childhood Overweight And Obesity In A Primary Care Setting, David Hernandez
Improving Provider Adherence To Guidelines In Addressing Childhood Overweight And Obesity In A Primary Care Setting, David Hernandez
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of the quality improvement project was to improve BMI measurement, screening, identification, documentation, and assessment of childhood overweight and obesity among children ages 3 to 18 years old in a primary care setting. Primary care providers continue to fail to address childhood overweight and obesity and have a positive impact on this issue. Delay in early identification and assessment of childhood obesity and overweight may affect patients’ qualify of life and the efficiency of health care. Over the last 30 years, the rates of childhood overweight and obesity have consistently escalated despite the existence of recommended guidelines and …
Effects Of Smoking Vs. Nicotine Replacement Therapy During Pregnancy On Childhood Health Outcomes: An Integrative Literature Review, Andrew J. Mcbride, Kristen P. Sabo, Emily D. Williams
Effects Of Smoking Vs. Nicotine Replacement Therapy During Pregnancy On Childhood Health Outcomes: An Integrative Literature Review, Andrew J. Mcbride, Kristen P. Sabo, Emily D. Williams
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
PICOT: In pregnant women does the use of nicotine replacement therapy compared to smoking during pregnancy reduce the risk of future childhood health concerns?
Methods: A search was conducted on healthcare literature databases (Alt HealthWatch, AMED, CINAHL, and Medline). The initial search yielded 940 results related to the topic. Initial review narrowed the search to 25 articles. Articles were excluded if published before 2008. After reviewing the full articles and evaluating effectiveness of the studies, 12 studies met the criteria. These 12 articles focused on the effects of smoking and childhood outcomes, NRT, and success of NRT.
Findings: The articles concluded …
Spatial Distribution Of Obesity Among West Virginia 5th Grade Children: Analysis Of The Socioeconomic, Physical, And Personal Environment, Sherry Roper
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Childhood obesity defined as a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex, is considered an epidemic in the United States. Biology and lifestyle behaviors have been identified as important factors in the development of childhood obesity; however, researchers are beginning to place more emphasis upon the impact that continual environmental exposures have upon obesity development. Environmental risk factors associated with obesity are distributed continuously over space, yet evidence suggests that burden of risk may not be evenly dispersed across a community. West Virginia (WV), a rural Appalachian community has …
