This dissertation presents physical activity, sedentary behavior, and bedrest (sleep estimation) data from ActiGraph devices worn during pregnancy and postpartum. Analyses of these data consider how these behaviors may relate to each other and health outcomes in the mother and child. The research aims to bridge the gap in understanding the intricate relationship between physical activity health behaviors and maternal and infant health metrics during the critical phases of pregnancy and postpartum. BACKGROUND: Neonatal and early-life gut microbiome changes are associated with altered cardiometabolic and immune development. In this study, we explored Cesarean delivery effects on the gut microbiome in our high-risk, under-resourced Bronx, NY population.

RESULTS: Fecal samples from the Bronx MomBa Health Study (Bronx MomBa Health Study) were categorized by delivery mode (vaginal/Cesarean) and analyzed via 16 S rRNA gene sequencing at four timepoints over the first two years of life. Bacteroidota organisms, which have been linked to decreased risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes, were relatively reduced by Cesarean delivery, while Firmicutes organisms were increased. Child physical abuse is a significant cause of injury in infants and young children and can present in a variety of ways. Failure to recognize abuse in infants and young children can be life-threatening and is often recurrent until safety interventions occur. It is unclear if socioeconomic status (SES) factors influence severity of illness of patients hospitalized with bronchiolitis. This study was conducted to identify SES factors including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Social Vulnerability Composite Index (SVI), estimated income, proportion of minority, proportion of living below poverty, insurance status, and number of household members associated with length of stay (LOS) and intensive care unit admission. Infants hospitalized at a tertiary care urban center for bronchiolitis were identified using International Classification of Diseases codes. BACKGROUND: Left ventricular free wall rupture (LVFWR) is a rare and fatal complication after acute myocardial infarction. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are recommended.

METHODS: Between August 1999 and February 2023, 11 patients aged between 64 and 79 years developed LVFWR after acute myocardial infarction (mean interval, 3.5 days). Three patients had active bleeding (blowout-type LVFWR), and the other 8 patients experienced the oozing or sealed state. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant viral pathogen that causes respiratory infections in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. RSV-related illnesses impose a substantial economic burden worldwide annually. The molecular structure, function, and in vivo interaction mechanisms of RSV have received more comprehensive attention in recent times, and significant progress has been made in developing inhibitors targeting various stages of the RSV replication cycle. These include fusion inhibitors, RSV polymerase inhibitors, and nucleoprotein inhibitors, as well as FDA-approved RSV prophylactic drugs palivizumab and nirsevimab.
