Dissertations
The Dominican healthcare system faces many challenges, and dental education is not an exception. The lack of competencies established for dentistry is one of the most critical challenges that dentistry faces. There is no way to guarantee that all dentists receive the same quality education with no standards and lack of competencies. Previous research has revealed that the competencies achieved by dental students determine the way such students develop their professional practice in the future as dental graduates (Alcota, De Gauna, & González, 2016). However, there is a lack of shared language observed in dental education around the world. Not …

Health Services Research Dissertations
Shortages of dental professionals and access barriers to dental care are challenges to improving oral health and decreasing the burden of dental diseases. There are more than 57 million individuals in the U.S. who live in dental health professional shortage areas (DHPSA). The U.S. DHPSA areas need 9,951 dental practitioners to overcome the obstacles to oral care access. Due to dental care needs for these populations, it is imperative to find a new method to reach these underserved populations. Teledentistry is an innovative technology that can be used to improve access to care and oral health outcomes. Unfortunately, there is …

Service-Learning Programs Impact On Dental Students' Confidence In Treating Pediatric Population, Bushra Bhatti
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: In 2011, Clinical Service-Learning (DENS 762) became a formal university-designated course required to all senior dental students at VCU School of Dentistry. The interest of this study was to measure students' experience in treating pediatric patients and to determine the effect the course had on students' self-perceived confidence in treating the pediatric population. Methods: This was an observational study of the VCU class of 2012 who were enrolled in the clinical service-learning class. Following their service-learning rotations, fourth-year dental students were surveyed about their experiences on their service-learning rotation. Out of 105 students, 76 completed the survey. Results: The …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The overall purpose of this research project is to survey experience and education of current dental students regarding domestic violence. Domestic violence has been recognized as one of our nation's most serious public health issues. Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. Dentists can act as one of the first lines of intervention in recognizing common dental and facial trauma which may be associated with domestic violence victims including: broken teeth, facial bruising, and jaw fractures.
Current data suggest that education about domestic violence can help the dental professional in overcoming some of the barriers …
Effects Of Ultrasonic And Hand-Activated Scaling On Tactile Sensitivity In Second Year Dental Hygiene Students In A Clinical Setting, Miranda Beeson
Effects Of Ultrasonic And Hand-Activated Scaling On Tactile Sensitivity In Second Year Dental Hygiene Students In A Clinical Setting, Miranda Beeson
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if time spent instrumenting class III, IV, and V calculus clients, either hand-activated or with an ultrasonic scaler, decreased the tactile sensitivity of the clinician, and if change occurs in index finger, middle finger, and thumb tactile sensitivity prior to and following 45-minute scaling episodes. This study also afforded an opportunity to determine if tactile sensitivity changed in the same dental hygiene students over a one-year period of time by comparing data with that of a similar study conducted in the fall of 2002. Random assignment and a sample size of 25 …
