Lateral Cephalometric Analysis Of Asymptomatic Volunteers And Symptomatic Patients With And Without Bilateral Temporomandibular Joint Disk Displacement, Jose A. Bosio, James G. Burch, Ross H. Tallents, Dale B. Wade, Frank M. Beck Sep 1998

Lateral Cephalometric Analysis Of Asymptomatic Volunteers And Symptomatic Patients With And Without Bilateral Temporomandibular Joint Disk Displacement, Jose A. Bosio, James G. Burch, Ross H. Tallents, Dale B. Wade, Frank M. Beck

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Few studies of dentofacial and orthodontic structural relationships relative to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction have been reported. We undertook this investigation to determine any correlation of orthodontic and dentofacial characteristics with TMJ bilateral disc displacement. The population of patients was selected from a TMJ clinic where a control group of asymptomatic volunteers had been previously established and standardized. Differences in skeletal structural features were determined among three study groups: (1) asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ disk displacement, (2) symptomatic patients with no TMJ disc displacement, and (3) symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement. Thirty-two asymptomatic volunteers without disk displacement …

Cationic liposome-mediated intracellular delivery of a fluorescein-labeled chimeric DNA-RNA ribozyme targeted to the HIV-1 5' LTR was investigated, using THP-1, THP-1/HIV-1(IIIB) or HeLa/LAV cells. Different fluorescence patterns were observed when the cells were exposed to Lipofectamine, Lipofectin or DMRIE:DOPE (1:1) complexed to the ribozyme. With Lipofectamine intense cell-associated fluorescence was found. Incubation with Lipofectin resulted in less intense diffuse fluorescence, while with DMRIE an intense but sporadic fluorescence was observed. Differentiated THP-1/HIV-1(IIIB) cells were more susceptible to killing by liposome-ribozyme complexes than THP-1 cells. Under non-cytotoxic conditions (a 4-h treatment) complexes of 5, 10 or 15 μM Lipofectin or DOTAP:DOPE …

Isolation Of Lautropia Mirabilis From Oral Cavities Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Children, S. N. Rossmann, P. H. Wilson, J. Hicks, B. Carter, S. G. Cron, C. Simon, C. M. Flaitz, G. J. Demmler, W. T. Shearer, M. W. Kline Jun 1998

Isolation Of Lautropia Mirabilis From Oral Cavities Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Children, S. N. Rossmann, P. H. Wilson, J. Hicks, B. Carter, S. G. Cron, C. Simon, C. M. Flaitz, G. J. Demmler, W. T. Shearer, M. W. Kline

Journal Articles

Lautropia mirabilis, a pleomorphic, motile, gram-negative coccus, has been isolated from the oral cavities of 32 of 60 (53.3%) children infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 3 of 25 (12.0%) HIV-uninfected controls; the association of L. mirabilis isolation with HIV infection is significant (P < 0.001). All children in the study, both HIV-infected children and controls, were born to HIV-infected mothers. The presence of this bacterium was not associated with clinical disease in these children. The HIV-infected children with L. mirabilis did not differ from the HIV-infected children without L. mirabilis in immunological status, clinical status, or systemic medications. The role of HIV infection itself or concomitant factors in the establishment of L. mirabilis in the oral cavity remains to be elucidated.

The Effects Of Managed Care On The Quality Of Dental Hygiene Care, Marybeth Magner May 1998

The Effects Of Managed Care On The Quality Of Dental Hygiene Care, Marybeth Magner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Managed care has become a prominent mechanism for insuring dental care. Empirical research suggests that managed dental plans provide lower quality care to patients. However, few studies have specifically addressed the effects of managed care on the quality of dental hygiene care. Thus, in this study the researcher examines whether dental hygienists deliver a lower level of treatment to managed care patients than to those who are not subject to managed care. Questionnaire data were gathered from 193 members of the American Dental Hygienists' Association residing in the Chicago area. The primary independent variable, managed care, was measured with an …

Ectopic Eruption Of Maxillary First Permanent Molars: Treatment Options And Report Of Two Cases, H. Cem Güngör, Nil Altay Apr 1998

Ectopic Eruption Of Maxillary First Permanent Molars: Treatment Options And Report Of Two Cases, H. Cem Güngör, Nil Altay

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Irreversible ectopic eruption of maxillary first permanent molars may lead to crowded permanent dentition when it is overlooked. The situation usually requires active treatment. In the presented irreversible ectopic eruption cases, distalization and uprighting of maxillary first permanent molars were achieved using removable orthodontic appliances.

Gene Delivery By Negatively Charged Ternary Complexes Of Dna, Cationic Liposomes And Transferrin Or Fusigenic Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, R. Caspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş Jan 1998

Potential problems with the use of viral vectors for gene therapy necessitate the development of efficient nonviral vectors. The association of transferrin, or the pH-sensitive peptide GALA, with cationic liposomes composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane and its equimolar mixture with dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine, under conditions where the liposome/DNA complex is negatively charged, drastically increased luciferase expression from pCMVluc. The percentage of cells transfected, measured by β-galactosidase expression, was also increased by about 10-fold. The zeta potential of the ternary complexes was lower than that of the liposome/DNA complexes. Transfection activity of positively charged complexes was also enhanced by association with transferrin, GALA or …
