Impact Of Interviews On Heterosexual Students' Expressions Of Cultural Competency, Carol Isaac, Linda Behar-Horenstein
Impact Of Interviews On Heterosexual Students' Expressions Of Cultural Competency, Carol Isaac, Linda Behar-Horenstein
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the effects of a cultural competency intervention on dental pre-doctoral students’ attitudes toward individuals of a different sexual orientation. 22 heterosexual students interviewed gay or lesbian individuals and wrote reflective text. Results illustrated that participants found that their interviewees had “surprisingly similar” beliefs and values – especially in the areas of religion and family. Because of their “similar values,” these students expressed respect toward their interviewees who were “so different” than themselves. This conclusion of “sameness” forced them to see homosexuals as people, rather than a stigmatized invisible outgroup, mitigating sexual …

Anatomical Study Of The Greater Palatine Artery: Clinical Implications For Palatal Graft Procedures, Nina Marie Karin Cunningham
Anatomical Study Of The Greater Palatine Artery: Clinical Implications For Palatal Graft Procedures, Nina Marie Karin Cunningham
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: The palate is a well-established donor site for obtaining graft tissue in periodontal plastic surgery procedures. However, proximity to the adjacent teeth on the lateral aspect and the greater palatine neurovascular bundle (GPB) on the medial aspect limit the amount of graft tissue that can be obtained from the palate. Previous studies have been concerned with the location of the greater palatine foramen as well as the greater palatine artery (GPA) and have established guidelines on how to estimate the distance between the teeth and the GPB. Traditionally, clinicians follow these guidelines and choose to avoid removing graft tissue …
A Comparative Evaluation Of Endodontic Irrigation Methods For Removal Of The Smear Layer, Ramzi Walid Alhashimi
A Comparative Evaluation Of Endodontic Irrigation Methods For Removal Of The Smear Layer, Ramzi Walid Alhashimi
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the effect of various irrigation systems on smear layer removal in curved root canals. Root canal irrigation plays an important role in the debridement and disinfection of the root canal system. It has been well documented that the flushing component of the irrigants is as important as the tissue dissolving capability. Therefore, the efficacy of the irrigant might also be influenced by the method by which it is introduced. Fifty-one recently extracted molar teeth with root curvatures of more than 30° were selected according to Schneider's method. The teeth were …
Comparison Of Resistance To Sliding Between Brackets And Archwires Utilizing Various Ligature Materials, Jagdesh Dudani
Comparison Of Resistance To Sliding Between Brackets And Archwires Utilizing Various Ligature Materials, Jagdesh Dudani
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between ligature material and frictional force created during orthodontic cuspid retraction. Maximum static and mean kinetic frictional resistance between conventional metallic orthodontic appliances and esthetic orthodontic appliances will be compared as well. Background: The use of ceramic brackets in conjunction with coated archwires and ligatures as an alternative to conventional stainless steel appliances has increased in response to the demand for more esthetic orthodontic appliances. Esthetic appliances are associated with increased frictional forces and therefore thought to slow the orthodontic treatment. Knowledge of frictional forces generated within various orthodontic …
Accuracy And Consistency Of Preformed Orthodontic Arch Wires And The Effect Of Energy Drinks, Caroline Albea
Accuracy And Consistency Of Preformed Orthodontic Arch Wires And The Effect Of Energy Drinks, Caroline Albea
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Selection of the proper arch wire requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the mechanical properties of wires as well as the system being used. Even with careful selection, orthodontists may experience different results due to the inaccuracy of the stated wire dimensions. Previous studies by Melling et al. have shown nickel titanium, stainless steel, and chrome-cobalt arch wires to be thinner than their marketed values.1 However, the literature is lacking information regarding (1) accuracy of the currently available orthodontic arch wires and (2) the consistency of the arch wire size. Orthodontic wires are also exposed to various chemical …
Evaluating Conventional And Digital Impressions Of Single Unit Restorations, And Conventional Vs. Digital Impressions From The Laboratory Technicians’ Perspective, Tagreed Alohali
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objectives: To Evaluate the quality of Digital Impressions and Conventional Impressions sent to commercial dental labs and to compare Conventional impressions vs. Digital impressions from the Laboratory Technicians’ Perspective. Background: The literature lacks studies that evaluate the quality of final impressions of indirect restorations, particularly in the USA, additionally there is a direct relation between impressions accuracy and produced restoration quality, which makes it impossible to produce high quality restoration from poor impression. Methods: 259 PVS impressions were evaluated for their quality by a calibrated examiner using a specific evaluation form. Type of tray, arch and required restoration were recorded. …

Tooth Borne Anchorage: A Comparative Analysis, Shane Hodson
Tooth Borne Anchorage: A Comparative Analysis, Shane Hodson
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare two anchorage modalities. Differential mass and differential moments were compared for their anchorage effectiveness in the sagittal and vertical dimensions. Class I patients with maximum anchorage requirements and treated with four first premolar extractions were selected. Background: Due to a severe combination of crowding, incisor proclination and protrusion, and procumbency of the lips, certain patients require extractions and maximum anchorage in orthodontic treatment.8 Two tooth borne anchorage modalities, differential mass and differential moments, have been shown to be able to achieve maximum anchorage requirements.5, 7 Methods: The available digital records of …
An In-Vitro Comparison Of Bond Quality Using A Novel Flash-Free Adhesive System With Metal Brackets, Joseph Kevin Ryan
An In-Vitro Comparison Of Bond Quality Using A Novel Flash-Free Adhesive System With Metal Brackets, Joseph Kevin Ryan
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: 3M Unitek (2724 Peck Rd, Monrovia, CA 91016) has recently released a new adhesive system labeled APCTM Flash-Free (APCTM FF) that pledges to eliminate flash removal from the orthodontic bracket bonding process. The company states that the bond strength of this new system is comparable to other adhesive systems such as APCTM PLUS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond quality of APCTM FF by measuring excess adhesive, shear bond strength (SBS), microleakage penetration and adhesive remnant index (ARI) compared to APCTM PLUS. Methods: Eighty brackets were bonded on freshly extracted bovine permanent mandibular incisors as …
Clinical, Microbiological And Radiographic Comparison Of Two Treatment Strategies Of Peri-Implantitis, Genevieve Payne
Clinical, Microbiological And Radiographic Comparison Of Two Treatment Strategies Of Peri-Implantitis, Genevieve Payne
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Dental implants have revolutionized the world of dentistry since their discovery by Branemark (5). Millions of dental implants are being placed in the United States every year. Dental implants are the best option for many people to replace missing teeth in a predictable fashion. In spite of the high success and survival rates of dental implants, complications and failures can occur. Peri-implantitis generates an inflammatory response that involves both soft tissue inflammation and progressive loss of supporting bone beyond biologic remodelling (AAP consensus paper 2013 (2)). A recent meta-analysis by Decks in 2016 (13) reported the prevalence of peri-implantitis to …
Effect Of Ph And Recharge Protocol On Fluoride Release From Orthodontic Band Adhesives, Erica Kader
Effect Of Ph And Recharge Protocol On Fluoride Release From Orthodontic Band Adhesives, Erica Kader
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objective: This study evaluated the release of fluoride from orthodontic band adhesives before and after exposure to fluoride varnish (FV), MI Paste (MIP), MI Paste Plus (MIPP), or no application, in neutral and acidic solutions. Background: White spot lesions (WSLs) occur in 73% of orthodontic patients. WSLs occur as a result of plaque accumulation, which leads to increased acidity of the oral cavity and subsequent enamel demineralization. Topical fluoride is frequently used as therapy for WSLs, in the form of toothpaste, mouth-rinse and varnish. In an effort to reduce demineralization around fixed appliances, fluoride-releasing adhesives have been employed, including glass …
