Patient Preference And Compliance Between Hawley Retainers And Vacuum-Formed Retainers Following Orthodontic Treatment., Justin Wild Aug 2013

Patient Preference And Compliance Between Hawley Retainers And Vacuum-Formed Retainers Following Orthodontic Treatment., Justin Wild

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The traditional Hawley retainer has been replaced in many orthodontic offices by vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs). There has yet to be a study that investigates preferences and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and vacuum-formed retainers by allowing each to be worn within the same patient. Specific Aim: To determine differences in compliance and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and VFRs. Hypothesis: There will be increased compliance with VFRs due to better esthetics, speech, and comfort. Methods: In consecutive months but in a different order, two treatment groups received a set of Hawleys and VFRs following comprehensive treatment. All patients were …

Influence Of Facial Profile On Social Perceptions: A 3d Video Imaging Study., Lisa Babb Apr 2013

Influence Of Facial Profile On Social Perceptions: A 3d Video Imaging Study., Lisa Babb

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of facial convexity on the perception of social attributes in a young adult population. Nine models were asked to pose for a 3 dimensional photograph that was then modified to represent ideal, retrognathic, and prognathic facial convexity angles. Survey evaluators were shown digital videos of models with ideal and non-ideal profiles and asked to rate their perception of the following 4 social attributes: intelligence, athleticism, popularity, and leadership ability using a visual analog scale. Results gathered from 271 evaluators showed that the model images with ideal facial convexity angles were …

The Influence Of Active Reminders On Oral Hygiene Compliance In Orthodontic Patients, Matthew Eppright Apr 2013

The Influence Of Active Reminders On Oral Hygiene Compliance In Orthodontic Patients, Matthew Eppright

Theses and Dissertations

Text message reminders have proven effective for positive behavioral changes in medicine, but their influence on oral hygiene compliance has never been tested. This study aimed to determine if text message reminders about oral hygiene have an influence on the level of compliance. In this prospective randomized controlled clinical trial, 42 orthodontic patients were assigned to a text message or control group. Parents of patients assigned to the text message group received a reminder text message one weekday each week. Oral hygiene compliance was measured using bleeding index, modified gingival index, plaque index, and visual examination of white spot lesion …

Three-Dimensional Photography Of Facial Morphology Of Adult African-Americans Compared To Various Population Sets, Leslie Talbert

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study is to compare the facial morphologies of an adult African-American population to an adult Caucasian-American population using three-dimensional surface imaging. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional facial images were captured via a stereo-photogrammetric camera system (3dMDfaceTM system). One hundred images of each population (African-American and Caucasian-American) were taken. Subjects were between 19-30 years of age, normal BMI, and no gross craniofacial anomalies. All facial images were aligned and combined using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software to produce a male and female facial average for each population. The facial averages were then superimposed for comparison and the …
