Effects Of A Mandatory Covid-19 Testing Policy On No-Show Rates For Aerosol Generating Procedures, Ramin Kashani Dds, Natesha Kumar Dds, Sheena Nandi Dds, Mph, Courtney H. Chinn Dds, Mph

The New York State Dental Journal

Purpose: To determine the impact of a mandatory COVID-19 testing policy on visit no- show rates. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review at Bellevue Hospital’s Pediatric Dental Clinic, comparing no-show rates and dental work completed before and during this policy. Results: We assessed a total of 812 scheduled appointments. After the policy, we found no statistical difference between no-show rates, more quadrants of dental work completed per visit (P<0.001), and shorter interval times between appointments (P<0.001). Conclusion: The policy did not increase visit no-show rates. We also found more treatment completed in a shorter timeframe.

Rural Oral Health Access Disparities In New York State, Renae Williams Atkinson Dmd, Ms, Stacy Mcilduff Cfre, Hayward Derek Horton Phd

The New York State Dental Journal

Disparities in access to dental care for those whose primary/only dental insurance is Medicaid is a known issue. The infamous case of 12-year-old Deamonte Driver from Maryland brought this great need for access to private dental care through Medicaid to the fore. Yet, to this date, there has been no resource to address this great need.

Dentists accepting Medicaid fall into two categories: those who practice in federally qualified health centers (FQHC), and those who practice privately. FQHCs are known anecdotally to have long waitlists, delaying access to needed care (as in the case of Driver). This is compounded by …

Success Of Implants In Patients With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Osman Khan, Kathryn Gauch, Alison Newgard Dds, Ezzard Rolle Dds

The New York State Dental Journal

With the development of effective antiviral medication, patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer, with fewer comorbidities. Because HIV is a chronic disease, patients are looking for long-term solutions to dental care. As dental providers, it is important that we treat patients to the standard of care. Currently, implants are the standard of care for treating edentulous areas. Dental providers may be hesitant to recommend implants in patients with complex medical conditions like HIV. However, research has shown that if a patient with HIV is well-controlled, dental implant success is the same as with a healthy non-HIV infected …

Clinical Pharmacology Of Cannabis Relevant To Dentistry, Fran M. Gengo Pharmd, Pcp Jun 2024

Clinical Pharmacology Of Cannabis Relevant To Dentistry, Fran M. Gengo Pharmd, Pcp

The New York State Dental Journal

Cannabis is no longer an illicit drug but rather a drug whose use has dramatically increased because its recreational use is largely legal, and its use in medicine has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of many difficult to treat disorders including chronic pain, spasticity, and several cancer related problems to name but a few.

This change represents several new challenges for dentists. Chronic cannabis use can increase the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease and dental caries. Cannabis also has been shown to alter the clinical pharmacokinetics and the magnitude of the clinical actions of many pharmacologic agents frequently used …

An Unusual Presentation Of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Aaron E. Yancoskie, Ghazeleh Peiravani Dds, Jordana S. Rothernberg Dds, Anthony S. Alessi Dmd, Md, Heather Z. Fugazy Dds

The New York State Dental Journal

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a destructive process that may involve both hard and soft tissues. While rare, it has a predilection for the oral and maxillofacial region. LCH occurs across the age range, yet is often diagnosed in the pediatric population. The dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst. It typically presents in young adult patients as a solitary lesion associated with impacted third molars. Here we present a case of LCH occurring in the wall of a DC in a 12-year-old male.

Managing Perforating Internal Root Resorption Non-Surgically: A Report Of 2 Cases And A Review Of The Literature, Joseph C. Stern Dds Jun 2024

Managing Perforating Internal Root Resorption Non-Surgically: A Report Of 2 Cases And A Review Of The Literature, Joseph C. Stern Dds

The New York State Dental Journal

Aim: To describe the use of bioceramics in the non-surgical treatment of perforating internal root resorption.

Summary: Confusion over the subject of root resorption seems ubiquitous in the general dental community. Because of the several subheadings such as internal, external cervical, and apical, and because of a variety of causes for each, such as trauma, pressure, infection, inflammation, and systemic, the confusion can be understandable. It seems that this confusion arises primarily from the nomenclature describing the location and etiology of root resorption. This case report deals with perforating internal root resorption (IRR), its causes, diagnosis, and successful nonsurgical treatment, …

Peripheral Ameloblastoma: Case Report And Literature Review, Anna Cappell Cooper Ba, Daria Vasilyeva Dds, Khanh Trinh Dmd, Elizabeth Philipone Dmd

The New York State Dental Journal

Peripheral ameloblastoma is a benign, painless, and slow-growing odontogenic tumor, which commonly affects gingival soft tissues or edentulous alveolar areas. Peripheral ameloblastoma is typically found during the 5th to 7th decades of life, with a mean patient age of 52 years, and exhibits a male predilection. Histopathology features are consistent with those of conventional ameloblastoma. The treatment of choice is conservative surgical excision with minimal disease-free margins and appropriate follow-up.

Challenges And Implications Of Mandated Reporting To Child Welfare In Dentistry, Katheryn Goldman Dmd, Mph, Phd, Daniel Pollack Msw, Jd Apr 2024

Challenges And Implications Of Mandated Reporting To Child Welfare In Dentistry, Katheryn Goldman Dmd, Mph, Phd, Daniel Pollack Msw, Jd

The New York State Dental Journal

Dentists are mandated reporters and are at the forefront of screening for child welfare referrals. The laws and systems surrounding reporting practice leave dentists working in pediatric settings with the responsibility of making a quick judgment about child maltreatment, with limited information, and sometimes limited training. Increased interdisciplinary collaboration and education on child welfare is necessary to better prepare and support dentists for practice with children who may present with suspected child maltreatment.

The New York State Dental Journal

Dynamic surgical guidance (DSG) is a recent advance in implant dentistry, used in an effort to maximize the efficiency and predictability of implant surgeries. A study, conducted by Navigate Surgical Technologies using the Inliant system, was undertaken in Toronto, Canada to analyze the success and accuracy of this technology. Twenty-three implants placed in twenty-two subjects were examined. The results showed that implant placement using Inliant was extremely accurate when compared to the pre-surgical plan. Additionally, there were no significant errors or deviations in implant placement. The study concluded with the Food and Drug Administration of the United States granting safety …

Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim Induced Thrombocytopenia: A Report Of Two Cases And A Literature Review, Leigh Griffin Dds, Michael Graffeo Dds, Jay Sher Dds, Paul D. Freedman Dds, Renée F. Reich

The New York State Dental Journal

Sulfamethoxazole- trimethoprim (ST) is a sulfonamide derivative antibiotic that interferes with bacterial folic acid synthesis and growth by blocking dihydrofolic acid formation from para-aminobenzoic acid. One of the potential side effects of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a blood disorder characterized by a decreased number of circulating platelets. We present two cases of ST induced thrombocytopenia where the oral manifestations were the first indication of the low platelet count leading to life saving interventions. Our aim is to educate dentists about the oral manifestations of thrombocytopenia and its association with ST as their examination may be instrumental in directing treatment.

The New York State Dental Journal

The origins of the current “opioid epidemic” sweeping America with its consequent overdose related deaths has resulted in numerous publications accusing the dental profession of excessively prescribing narcotic analgesics leading to the initial addictive episode. These allusions have prompted the national organization representing New York States’ almost 600 oral and maxillofacial surgeons to develop and promulgate in its official journal , a position paper detailing a non-narcotic pain management regimen to alleviate post operative discomfort. However, their pronouncement suggests prescribing a maximum daily dosage of ibuprofen which has previously been documented as causing myocardial infarction and stroke in vulnerable older …

The New York State Dental Journal

Introduction: The subepithelial connective tissue graft (S-CTG) is the gold standard in achieving root coverage but is not without limitations. The Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) is an alternative source that can compensate for the S-CTG’s limitations. Body: Severe recession type 1 (RT1) defects were treated with a combined approach of autogenous and allogeneic soft tissue grafting, optimizing the benefits of both types of materials, in order to achieve maximum root coverage (MRC). Conclusion: Identifying the anatomical limitations of gingival recession as it relates to tooth rotation and its impact on vascular supply will best prepare both the clinician and patient …
