Comprehensive Care: Harm Reduction and the Opioid Epidemic aims to delve deeper into the realities of opioid addiction and assess proposed prevention strategies by acknowledging the driving factors (biological, psychological, and social) and consequences of opioid abuse. Intervention strategies are offered from various access points ranging from the federal to individual level. The research conducted has shown that all access points must be considered for the success of prevention and treatment efforts. Previous literature has established that increases in prescription opioid misuse has resulted in similar increases in injection drug use (IDU), collectively referred to as the “opioid epidemic” in the US. Due to this surge in IDU, incidence of Hepatitis C (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are on the rise in many regions. Research conducted in Canada and elsewhere has supported the use of Safe Injection Facilities (SIFs) and Needle Syringe Programs (NSPs) to mollify disease incidence, but only NSPs are operating in the US despite SIFs having been in use in Canada for several decades. Drug abuse has long fascinated philosophers and scientists. Many different models have attempted to elucidate the mechanism behind drug addiction and analyze whether an addict has a choice in his behavior. The problem with these models is that they seem to suggest only two ways of viewing addiction. These models suggest either that a person cannot control his addiction and is therefore deserving of treatment, or that suggest a person can control their addictions and is not deserving of treatment, and instead needs threats of punishment to stop their behavior.
