Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois
Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois
DNP Projects
Background: Heart Failure is a disease known to affect nearly 6.5 million adults in the United States. Characterized by recurrent hospitalizations, heart failure significantly contributes to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs in the United States and worldwide. Because malnutrition is prevalent in the heart failure population, healthcare providers must perform nutritional assessments on admission to intervene in the case of malnutrition, prevent deterioration, and improve patient prognosis. Without intervention and early identification of malnutrition, heart failure hospitalizations will remain a significant problem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of an evidence-based educational program for cardiac …
Implementing A Stroke Process Improvement Group To Reduce Time To Thrombectomy In Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke At Greenwich Hospital, Victoria Merrill
Implementing A Stroke Process Improvement Group To Reduce Time To Thrombectomy In Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke At Greenwich Hospital, Victoria Merrill
DNP Projects
Introduction: Delays in door to skin puncture time for patients with ischemic stroke are associated with worse clinical outcomes. The following quality improvement study was conducted at Greenwich Hospital which aimed to decrease door to skin puncture time for endovascular stroke treatment. Greenwich Hospital began its new stroke program in January 2020 and opened thrombectomy capable interventional radiology (IR) services. Delays to door to skin puncture times existed with average time being 100 minutes with a goal time of 90 minutes or less for 50% or more of patients directly arriving to the hospital and 60 minutes or less for …
Increasing The Utilization Of A Cardiovascular Risk Assessment & Screening Tool Through Education In A Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Taylor A. Massey
Increasing The Utilization Of A Cardiovascular Risk Assessment & Screening Tool Through Education In A Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Taylor A. Massey
DNP Projects
Background and Significance: The World Health Organization (WHO) (2021) reports that 55.4 million people died worldwide in 2019; cardiovascular diseases due to ischemic heart disease and stroke were the top two leading causes of these deaths. Experts predict that by the year 2030, more than 22.2 million people will die annually from cardiovascular disease (Ruan et al., 2018). Noninvasive cardiovascular screening tests, such as the "Pulse4Pulse" screening tool, are a way to help providers identify patients at high-risk for cardiovascular disease and initiate treatment to reduce future risk.
Purpose: To increase provider utilization of the "Pulse4Pulse" screening test in a …
Improving Heart Failure Patient Referrals To The Center For Advanced Heart Failure & Pulmonary Vascular Disease At Hartford Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project, Dawn M. Surprenant
Improving Heart Failure Patient Referrals To The Center For Advanced Heart Failure & Pulmonary Vascular Disease At Hartford Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project, Dawn M. Surprenant
DNP Projects
Significance and Background: According to the Health Resources & Services Administration (2021), health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to process and understand basic health information to make appropriate health decisions. Low health literacy is prevalent in populations such as older adults, minorities, and in individuals with lower socioeconomic status and living in medical underserved areas. Recommendations are to access health literacy in cardiac patients, especially in the acute care setting to improve health outcomes upon discharge.
Purpose: To determine whether a health literacy assessment in hospitalized congested heart failure patients, before discharge, will affect referral …
Evaluating The Effect Of An Electronic Health Record Patient Portal On The Management Of Hypertension, Ashley Hall
Evaluating The Effect Of An Electronic Health Record Patient Portal On The Management Of Hypertension, Ashley Hall
DNP Projects
Background: Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and affects individuals globally, nationally, and locally. Consequences of uncontrolled hypertension include atherosclerosis, heart failure, stroke, and renal disease. The electronic health portal is a patient-specific, interactive tool that has been shown to promote adherence to provider recommendations and improve chronic disease management.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine the effects of education via an electronic healthcare portal on the blood pressure management of adults at a primary care clinic in a small town in Kentucky.
Methods: This study was a one-group pre/post intervention designed to evaluate provider …
Don't Just Check The Box: Check Your Athlete's Heart: Adding A 12-Lead Ecg To Pre-Participation Screening To Identify High Risk Of Sudden Cardiac Arrest In Male High School Athletes, Shannon King
DNP Projects
PURPOSE: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) continues to be the leading cause of death in male high school athletes participating in competitive sports. There is gap in the current preventative screening practice of history and physical alone. The purpose of this project is to evaluate adding a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) to pre-participation screening captures cardiac abnormalities that identify male athletes at a higher risk for developing SCA. METHODS: A descriptive secondary analysis design to determine the incidence of cardiac abnormalities detected with the addition of a 12-lead ECG during pre-participation screenings (annual sports physical) of high school-aged male athletes. The study …
The Effect Of An Educational Video On Device-Related Concerns In A Single-Center Left Ventricular Assist Device Population, Devan Costelle
The Effect Of An Educational Video On Device-Related Concerns In A Single-Center Left Ventricular Assist Device Population, Devan Costelle
DNP Projects
PURPOSE:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of various concerns among left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients and evaluate the effect of an educational video intervention on reducing those concerns in a single-center adult LVAD population.
METHODS:A 15-point LVAD Concerns Scale was created to evaluate the prevalence of specific device-related concerns. An educational video was created to address the concerns presented in the LVAD Concerns Scale. Data collection took place from November 2018 to February 2019. A cross-sectional, pre- post-test implementation study design was used to both identify various device-related concerns that exist among LVAD patients and …
Nurse-Led Positive Psychology Intervention Is Feasible In Patients With Heart Failure, Erin Taylor
Nurse-Led Positive Psychology Intervention Is Feasible In Patients With Heart Failure, Erin Taylor
DNP Projects
Introduction: Prevalence of heart failure (HF) in the US is projected to rise 46% by 2030, resulting in more than 8 million people with HF. Negative psychologic states including depression and pessimism (negative future expectations) have been linked with poor cardiovascular outcomes, including HF. Despite the fact that optimism (positive future expectations) and other positive affective states have been associated with superior outcomes, there has been little focus on interventions designed to increase positive psychological states in patients with HF.
Objective: To test the acceptability and feasibility of a nurse-led positive psychology intervention, Best Possible Self (BPS).
Methods: A convenience …
Evaluating The Feasibility Of Outpatient Iv Diuretic Therapy For Patients With Decompensated Heart Failure, Christina Thompson
Evaluating The Feasibility Of Outpatient Iv Diuretic Therapy For Patients With Decompensated Heart Failure, Christina Thompson
DNP Projects
Heart failure is a prevalent chronic disease that contributes to many hospitalizations that may not always be necessary. Evidence supports that patients who present to the Emergency Department in fluid overload can be treated in the outpatient setting when only IV diuretic is warranted. Both decreases in costs and improved outcomes have been reported, yet there has been little movement toward providing outpatient diuresis versus hospitalization. The purpose of this DNP project was to evaluate the feasibility of an outpatient option for IV diuretic therapy for patients with acute decompensated heart failure experiencing symptoms of fluid overload. This descriptive study …

DNP Projects
Background: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and accounts for more than 17.3 million deaths per year with hyperlipidemia as one of the leading risk factors. The 2013 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) hyperlipidemia guideline recommends healthy lifestyle habits, risk estimation of the development of cardiovascular disease using a risk calculator, and intensity dosed statin therapy. There has been controversy among providers resulting in confusion and inconsistent application of the guideline. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine provider adherence to the AHA/ACC hyperlipidemia guideline in a primary …
