Background:

Cardiovascular physiology studies have been largely limited to adult models; yet, significant developmental differences exist between the immature and adult heart. The field of pediatric research has largely been limited to immortalized cardiomyocyte cell lines, which lack physiologically relevant action potentials, and primary neonatal myocytes that have a limited life span and lack physiologically relevant automaticity. As a result, our understanding of developmental changes in ion channel expression, t-tubule development, and excitation-contraction coupling have been deduced from 2D simplified cell models. Background: Children undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass receive high dose opioids for analgesia and to reduce the neurohormonal stress response. While opioids have excellent pharmacodynamics profiles adverse effects include: respiratory depression, bradycardia, nausea, vomiting, and tolerance. Additionally, opioids with short half-lives like fentanyl require several boluses to be administered during surgery causing fluctuating levels analgesia. Several strategies to advance pain control incorporate regional and neuraxial anesthetic techniques, however anticoagulation preclude its routine use. Alternatively using opioids with longer half-lives for analgesia may improve pain control and reduce adverse effects.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally, taking the lives of almost 18 million patients around the world each year. The overwhelming majority of cardiovascular deaths take place in low- to mid-income counties, suggesting that most cardiovascular deaths are preventable. In this study, current literature on secondary prevention of coronary artery disease was analyzed. Specific emphasis was given to preventative measures and successes in low income countries. Based on a literature review, a patient questionnaire to better understand patient adherence to preventative measures was created. Background: To achieve the 90-minute reperfusion goal in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care, providers must diagnose STEMIs from electrocardiograms (ECGs) obtained upon emergency room arrival and appropriately activate the catheterization lab. To enhance early STEMI care, we sought to improve medical student STEMI recognition and diagnostic accuracy with a teaching module we designed and developed.

New diagnostic catheters can be developed by delivering and acquiring light through a small fiberoptic bundle. This can provide a useful real time feedback guidance to observe tissue damage caused by thermal injury used to treat cardiac arrhythmias. Yet, little is known about the exact spectral changes caused by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in different types of cardiac tissue. We hypothesized that the most sensitive optical ranges for characterizing thermal injury can be revealed by comparing spectral information from different areas of the heart before and after RF ablation.
