Physical Exertion As A Risk Factor For Ventricular Arrhythmia: A Prospective Cohort Study, Harpreet S. Chahal

Episodes of physical exertion are associated with an immediately higher risk of cardiovascular events while physical activity over the long-term is cardioprotective. To assess the transient and long-term risk of ventricular arrhythmia (VA), we conducted a nested case-crossover study within a prospective cohort of 97 patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD). Within an hour of episodes of exertion, the risk of VA was 5.3 (95% CI 2.7 – 10.6) times greater compared to periods of rest. The association was higher among patients with aerobic fitness below the median (RR[relative risk]=17.5, 95% 5.2 – 58.5) than for patients with aerobic fitness above …

This thesis describes the development of a portable, smart-phone connected system for continuous cardiac monitoring. Heart failure accounts for over 32 billion dollars in total cost each year, and is the most common cause of hospitalization for persons 65 years of age or older. Patients with HF experience poor self-care, are at risk for depressive symptoms, and have high rates of 30-day hospital readmissions. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association of MTX with cardiovascular morbidity, cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality in patients with autoimmune disease. Our primary outcome was incident cardiovascular events. After screening 13,479 citations, we identified a total of 30 eligible studies. We synthesized adjusted risk estimates using a random effects model. MTX was significantly associated with a 25% reduction in cardiovascular events (pooled RR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.86, I²: 11%), a 55% reduction in cardiovascular mortality (0.45, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.80, I²: 33%) and a 40% reduction in all-cause mortality (0.60, …

However, the research to date is neither comprehensive nor have there been any studies conducted on an Australian population. Introduction: Neutrophils (PMNs) and Macrophages are the first responders recruited consecutively to the site of injury/inflammation. PMNs’ response/fate as well as macrophage reprogramming ultimately determine the course of resolution of inflammation. Physiologic wound healing has a significant inflammatory component. An exaggerated inflammation however is self-defeating leading to delayed healing. Parenteral vitamin C (VitC) attenuated inflammation in murine sepsis models and in patients with sepsis. However information about the mechanisms by which VitC regulates these events is limited.

This thesis represents the initial phase of a proposed operator and patient friendly method designed to semi-automate the positioning and directing of an intravascular catheter in the human heart using a variable electromagnetically induced field to control a catheter tip equipped with three tiny fixed magnets oriented in XYZ planes. Here we demonstrate a comprehensive mathematical model which accurately calculates the magnetic field generated by the electromagnet system, and the magnetic torques and forces exerted on a three-magnet tip catheter.
