Race Differences In Predictors Of Weight Gain Among A Community Sample Of Smokers Enrolled In A Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Multiple Behavior Change Intervention., Marcia M Tan, Terry Bush, Jennifer C Lovejoy, Harold Javitz, Alula Jimenez Torres, Ken Wassum, Bonnie Spring

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

African Americans have disproportionate rates of post-cessation weight gain compared to non-Hispanic whites, but few studies have examined this weight gain in a multiracial sample of smokers receiving evidence-based treatment in a community setting. We examined race differences in short-term weight gain during an intervention to foster smoking cessation plus weight management. Data were drawn from the Best Quit Study, a randomized controlled trial conducted via telephone quitlines across the U.S. from 2013 to 2017. The trial tested the effects on cessation and weight gain prevention of adding a weight control intervention either simultaneously with or sequentially after smoking cessation …

Self-Administered Behavioral Skills-Based At-Home Virtual Reality Therapy For Chronic Low Back Pain: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial., Laura Garcia, Beth Darnall, Parthasarathy Krishnamurthy, Ian Mackey, Josh Sackman, Robert Louis, Todd Maddox, Brandon Birckhead

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is one of the most common and debilitating health conditions. Treatments for chronic low back pain typically focus on biomedical treatment approaches. While psychosocial treatments exist, multiple barriers prevent broad access. There is a significant unmet need for integrative, easily accessible, non-opioid solutions for chronic pain. Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology allowing innovation in the delivery of behavioral pain treatments. Behavioral skills-based VR is effective at facilitating pain management and reducing pain-related concerns. Continued research on these emerging approaches is needed.

OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, we seek to test the efficacy of a …

Successful Bilateral Electroconvulsive Therapy In A Patient With A Seizure Disorder Taking Levetiracetam, Lorazepam, And Zonisamide: A Case Report., Ian R Mcgrane, Rachel E Tenison, Dana M Bimler, Robert C Munjal, Jason R Molinaro

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be considered for treatment of severe, treatment-resistant, and emergent depression associated with MDD or bipolar disorder. Patients with epilepsy usually take medications that raise the seizure threshold, which poses challenges during ECT. We report a 66-year-old male with epilepsy taking levetiracetam extended-release (XR), lorazepam, and zonisamide requiring ECT for severe MDD. After literature review, the XR form of levetiracetam was changed to higher doses of the immediate-release (IR) formulation, and zonisamide was discontinued 2 days prior to ECT in the hospital and was resumed when the patient underwent outpatient continuation ECT. The patient was treated to …

An Exploratory Pilot Study With Plasma Protein Signatures Associated With Response Of Patients With Depression To Antidepressant Treatment For 10 Weeks., Eun Young Kim, Hee-Sung Ahn, Min Young Lee, Jiyoung Yu, Jeonghun Yeom, Hwangkyo Jeong, Hophil Min, Hyun Jeong Lee, Kyunggon Kim, Yong Min Ahn

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of global disability with a chronic and recurrent course. Recognition of biological markers that could predict and monitor response to drug treatment could personalize clinical decision-making, minimize unnecessary drug exposure, and achieve better outcomes. Four longitudinal plasma samples were collected from each of ten patients with MDD treated with antidepressants for 10 weeks. Plasma proteins were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively with a nanoflow LC-MS/MS technique. Of 1153 proteins identified in the 40 longitudinal plasma samples, 37 proteins were significantly associated with response/time and clustered into six according to time and response by …

Life Experiences Associated With Change In Perpetration Of Domestic Violence., Avanti Adhia, Vivian H Lyons, Hannah Cohen-Cline, Ali Rowhani-Rahbar

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: This study assessed whether several adult life experiences, including loss of support, loss of food security, loss of housing, and substance use cessation, are associated with change in domestic violence (DV) perpetration from early to later adulthood. Using 2015 to 2016 cross-sectional, self-report survey data from Medicaid enrollees in Oregon (N = 1620), we assessed change in DV perpetration from early adulthood (19-30 years) to later adulthood (≥ 31 years of age), cut points determined by existing survey questions. Multinomial logistic regression models were constructed to estimate the association between life experiences and physical DV perpetration using odds ratios …

Worsening Choreoathetosis In Huntington's Disease With Fluoxetine, Lisdexamfetamine, And Melatonin: A Case Report., Clayton J Hamilton, Tysen K Timmer, Robert C Munjal, Fernando Cardozo-Pelaez, Ian R Mcgrane

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Cognitive, affective, and sleep disturbances can be found in patients with Huntington's disease (HD), and medications used to treat these HD-related sequela can also impact HD-related movement disorders. We present the case of a 52-year-old Caucasian man with previously undiagnosed HD who exhibited significant choreoathetoid movements that improved with discontinuation of fluoxetine and lisdexamfetamine upon hospital admission. Following diagnosis of HD through genetic testing, he was administered 5mg of oral melatonin on two consecutive evenings, which resulted in worsening choreoathetosis. We calculated Naranjo adverse event scores of 5, 5, and 2 for fluoxetine, lisdexamfetamine, and melatonin, respectively, based on our …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: In contingency management (CM), individuals receive rewards for alcohol abstinence. CM is associated with reduced alcohol use in adults with co-occurring serious mental illnesses (SMI). Pre-treatment urine ethyl glucuronide (uEtG) levels equivalent to daily heavy drinking (uEtG >349ng/mL) are associated with poor response to CM. Modifications to CM are needed to improve outcomes for non-responders.

AIMS: To determine if pre-treatment heavy drinkers, defined by uEtG, with SMI achieve higher levels of alcohol abstinence when they receive an increased magnitude of reinforcement for abstinence (High-Magnitude CM) or reinforcers for reduced drinking, prior to receiving reinforcers for abstinence (Shaping CM), relative …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

The objective of this study was to determine whether the interaction between type of serious mental illness (SMI) and pre-treatment drinking severity, assessed by ethyl glucuronide (EtG), predicts EtG-positive urine samples submitted during treatment in outpatients with co-occurring alcohol dependence and SMI. Seventy-nine participants were randomized to treatment-as-usual or treatment-as-usual and contingency management (CM) targeting alcohol abstinence. Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the interaction of pre-treatment drinking (heavy drinking or light drinking) and SMI diagnosis (major depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia-spectrum disorders) across a 12-week treatment period. In the overall sample, the interaction of drinking severity and SMI diagnosis …
