A serological investigation of equine infectious anaemia (EIA), equine viral arteritis (EAV), glanders, and dourine was conducted on the sera of 346 Turkish horses using a combination of tests in series (ELISA and agar gel immunodiffusion) for EIA, virus neutralisation for EAV, and complement fixation (CF) for glanders and dourine. Forty-nine sera showed anticomplementary reactions and were not assessable in the CF test for glanders and dourine. No positive samples were detected for EIA, dourine, and glanders. Fifty-seven sera were positive for EAV. A systematic review of the distribution of these diseases in Turkey was conducted to describe their epidemiological …

Archaeological excavations at the site of Yenikapı, the most important main station for Metro and Marmaray projects on the European side of İstanbul, were started in 2004 with the discovery of numerous shipwrecks, amphorae, and skeletal remains belonging to animals. The findings from the excavations conducted by the İstanbul Archaeological Museums of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums proved that this site, known in the Ottoman period as 'Langa Bostanları', was actually the ancient harbor of Theodosius. The archeological material and animal skeletal residues, mostly of horse origin, were found side by side in excavations initiated in 2004 …

Small (1-3 µm in diameter, ring, oval, or comma shaped) piroplasms suggestive of Babesia spp. were observed upon microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears from a 3.5-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier with clinical signs of pyrexia, weakness, mucous membrane pallor, and depression living in Aydın, Turkey, in February, 2009. To confirm the presence and to identify the species of Babesia spp., a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was performed using primers amplifying a 670 bp fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia gibsoni and the PCR products were analyzed by sequencing. The nucleotide sequence was compared to the …

Checklist Of Small Ruminant Gastrointestinal Nematodes And Their Geographical Distribution In Turkey, Feri̇de Sevi̇mli̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This review presents a search of the literature about gastrointestinal nematodosis of small ruminants. The search was performed on 58 articles published on necropsied sheep and goats between 1937 and 2011 in Turkey. This review identified 43 nematode species belonging to sheep and goats, assessed the prevalence of infection in different regions of Turkey, and evaluated the effect of age, sex, race, nutrition, and seasonal condition. This is the first review that specifically evaluated the gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants for 74 annual periods in Turkey.
