A Stereological Study On Lumbosacral Segments Of Spinal Cord In The Geese, Gamze Çakmak, Zafer Soygüder

In this study, we aimed to determine the number, volume, and lumbosacral enlargement of the lumbosacral segments using stereology methods. In accordance with the study, 10 adult geese (regardless of sex) which were healthy and weighing 3-4 kg was chosen. After the geese had been perfused with 10% formaldehyde, the lumbosacral parts of their spinal cord were revealed by dissection. After each segment of the lumbosacral section had been separated, tissue samples were obtained from these segments. A Case Report Of Apatemon Gracilis (Szidat, 1928) Infectionin Domestic Geese In Mainland China, Dandan Liu, Zhennan Zhuo, Jianping Tao, Jinjun Xu

This is the first report of the diagnosis and treatment of Apatemon gracilis infection in domestic geese in mainland China confirmed at the molecular level. The mortality of geese reached 10% (150/1500). Necropsy examinations confirmed hemorrhagic inflammation of the small intestine and blood and catarrhal mucus in the enteric cavity. A large number of flukes were found in the first third of the small intestine, with one end buried in the intestinal mucosa, forming lesions at the absorption sites. The aim of the present study was to determine the histological structure and histochemical properties of the pancreatic ducts in the goose Anser anser. Pancreatic ducts of 6 male and 6 female geese were examined. Crossman’s triple stain and Masson’s trichrome stain were used for histological examination, and periodic acid–Schiff, alcian blue, periodic acid–Schiff/alcian blue, and aldehyde fuchsin/alcian blue stainings were performed for histochemical examination. Dorsal and ventral pancreatic ducts were found that transfer pancreatic secretion into the duodenum of the goose, and these channels were found to have a histologically similar structure. This experiment was carried out on 200 White Koluda geese, 1 day old, randomly divided into 2 groups with 50 males and 50 females in each group. From the first day until week 13, birds from the control groups were fed basic feeds; in the experimental groups, feed was supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg of selenium and 100 mg/kg of vitamin E. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of lice species on wild geese in the Elazığ district. Twenty wild geese were inspected for lice species between January and February in 1998 and 2001. Nine of these geese had been exposed to lice infestations and Anaticola anseris (Linnaeus, 1758) composed all the collected 92 lice. The morphological description of A. anseris was based on microscopy and microphotography pictures were taken.

Yield Traits Of Geese Of Different Origins Reared In Turkey I. Hatching Traits, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal

This study was carried out to determine the hatching traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. In the experiment, geese were selected from different regions of Turkey, (Kars-INRA), Isparta-Armutlu, Konya-Başkuyu and Konya-Tatlıcak); 20 female and 4 male 2-year-old geese were used. Egg production was 39.4, 13.0, 11.4 and 12.6 eggs/geese, and egg laying period was 133, 75, 60 and 73 days, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the original egg weight and hatched chick weight (P < 0.01). Egg weight loss proportions during incubation for the experimental groups were 12.92, 11.44, 11.38 and 12.22%, respectively.

This study was carried out to determine the growth traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. In the experiment, 25 INRA, 15 Armutlu, 15 Tatlıcak and 18 Başkuyu geese were used. The differences between chick weight, and 12^{th} and 25^{th} week live weight of the geese was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Live weight gains were highest at weeks 4 and 5 for the geese. Significant differences were found between the sex groups for week 8, 12, 16, 20 and 25 live weight (P < 0.001).

This study was carried out to determine the carcass traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. INRA, Armutlu, Başkuyu and Tatlıcak origin geese were used; 6 females and 6 males of each origin were slaughtered at the end of the experiment. Among the origins, the differences were statistically significant for leg weight, head and abdominal fat ratio to the body (P < 0.05), neck weight, feather and gizzard fat ratio to the body (P < 0.01), hot carcass, blood, head, foot, heart, liver, gizzard, cold carcass, wing, breast and back weight, and blood, heart, liver and back ratio to the body were also significant (P < 0.001).

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was purified from goose erythrocytes and some characteristics of the enzyme were investigated. The purification procedure was composed of 3 steps: hemolysate preparation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 3 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having a specific activity of 36.2 EU/mg protein, was purified for a yield of 68.79% and 3892 folds; to ascertain enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was performed. The egg production and incubation traits of native Turkish geese bred in the Kars region were examined in two separate trials. In the first trial, 100 female (70 one-year-old and 30 two-year-old) and 40 (two-year-old) male geese were used. The geese were divided into 20 groups. In each group there were five females and two males. Group feeding was used during the experiment. One-and 2-year-old geese laid 8.10 and 12.25 eggs/year, respectively. Pulmonary aspergillosis were examinated in a total of 22 geese (2-13 week-old), brought from A Geese Production Station in Kars and geese breeders. The lesions were seen as a hard nodules in all cases in the lungs, and also in 3 cases in the air sacs. They were multifocalty localized in each lobules, and 1-4 mm. in diameter and yellow in color. The lesions were characterized by granulomatous pneumonie and airsacculitis. The characteristic hyphae of Aspergillus spp. were demonstrated in granuloma in histopathological sections stained by periodic acid Schiff stain.
