The Effect Of Anesthetic Drugs During Craniotomy On Patient Outcomes, Thomas Vander Woude, Timothy Nold, Katherine Nowak, Donald Penning

Medical Student Research Symposium

Glioblastoma remains an aggressive, highly malignant brain cancer with poor prognosis despite treatment options including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The objective of this retrospective chart review study was to evaluate if there is a correlation between the type and dose of anesthetic drugs administered during craniotomy surgery for glioblastoma and the time to first postoperative tumor progression and mortality. Based on preliminary data in mice, it was hypothesized that the use of propofol during surgery is associated with slower tumor progression and lower mortality, when compared with other anesthetic drugs. In the observed time frame, 133 patients were diagnosed with …

BACKGROUND: Emergent airway management outside of the operating room is a high-risk procedure. Limited data exists about the indication and physiologic state of the patient at the time of intubation, the location in which it occurs, or patient outcomes afterward.

METHODS: We retrospectively collected data on all emergent airway management interventions performed outside of the operating room over a 6-month period. Documentation included intubation performance, and intubation related complications and mortality. Additional information including demographics, ASA-classification, comorbidities, hospital-stay, ICU-stay, and 30-day in-hospital mortality was obtained.

RESULTS: 336 intubations were performed in 275 patients during the six-month period. The majority of …

Assessing Nutritional Status Of Critically Ill Patients Using Serum Prealbumin Levels, Khushbakht Arbab, Hafsa Majid, Lena Jafri, Aysha Habib, Ahmed Raheem, Bushra Jamil, Bushra Akram, Madiha Hashmi

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients, contributes to poor outcomes. Biomarker serum prealbumin, can prevent the complications by commencement of nutritional support to improve clinical outcomes. This study was designed to assess the association between low serum prealbumin level (<18 mg/dl), with length of stay and all cause intensive care unit mortality.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2016 to July 2017 at Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi Pakistan. All consecutive patients, aged between 18 to 70 years, admitted in medical or surgical intensive care unit were included. Demographic, clinical history and blood samples for analysing serum prealbumin were obtained on first day of admission. Patients were categorized into two groups …

Intraoperative Hyperglycemia In Adult Patients Undergoing An Emergency Craniotomy Following A Traumatic Brain Injury As A Predictor Of Postoperative Outcomes And Mortality, Sara Lynn Hoover Jan 2013

Intraoperative Hyperglycemia In Adult Patients Undergoing An Emergency Craniotomy Following A Traumatic Brain Injury As A Predictor Of Postoperative Outcomes And Mortality, Sara Lynn Hoover

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an association between intraoperative blood glucose ≥150 mg/dl in patients undergoing an emergency craniotomy and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Length of Stay (LOS), hospital LOS and mortality.

Introduction: Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)’s are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The stress response by the body may cause an increase in blood glucose levels which can cause secondary brain injury. When a patient undergoes an emergency craniotomy following a TBI the increased stress on the body can cause an even higher blood glucose. There is no consensus in …

Apache-Ii Score Correlation With Mortality And Length Of Stay In An Intensive Care Unit, Saad Ahmed Naved,, Shahla Siddiqui, Fazal Hameed Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Objective: To correlate the APACHE-II score system with mortality and length of stay in ICU. Study Design: Cohort study. Place and Duration of Study: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from May 2005 to May 2006. Methodology: All adult patients who were admitted in the ICU were included. APACHE-II score was calculated at the second and seventh days of admission in the ICU. Patients who were discharged alive from the ICU or died after first APACHE-II Score (at 2nd day) were noted as the primary outcome measurement. Second APACHE-II score (at 7th day) was …
