Distribution And Proportion Of Immunoreactive Neuron Specific Enoclase Containing Cells In The Rat Pineal Gland, Alfonso Miranda C. Dec 1983

Distribution And Proportion Of Immunoreactive Neuron Specific Enoclase Containing Cells In The Rat Pineal Gland, Alfonso Miranda C.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distribution and proportion of cytoplasm containing immunoreactive neuron specific enolase (NSE) in the rat pineal have been investigated. Step serial sections of the pineal glands of 7 male Sprague-Dawley rats were stained for NSE using an indirect immunoperoxidase method. The volumes of the pineals and of the regions containing reactive cells were derived from the distance between sections and the sum of the corresponding sectional areas of camera lucida drawings. The proportion of the NSE areas actually consisting of NSE reactive cytoplasm was measured using an image array processor.

Cytoplasm reactive for NSE was consistently localized to the posterior …

Bird Distributional And Breeding Records For Southeastern Idaho, Utah, And Adjacent Regions, Clayton M. White, Herbert H. Frost, Dennis L. Shirley, G. Merrill Webb, Richard D. Porter Oct 1983

Bird Distributional And Breeding Records For Southeastern Idaho, Utah, And Adjacent Regions, Clayton M. White, Herbert H. Frost, Dennis L. Shirley, G. Merrill Webb, Richard D. Porter

Great Basin Naturalist

New distributional records or the status for 33 species of birds that have occurred within Utah, adjacent southeastern portions of Idaho, or along the border of states surrounding Utah are reviewed. Four species, the Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus), and Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), represent new Utah breeding records established within the past decade, and they are commented upon. One other, the Black-tailed Gnatcatcher (Polioptila melanura), may be breeding in Utah. The Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) may likewise be breeding in southeastern …

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson Jun 1983

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

Otopathology In Two Lines Of The Diabetic Chinese Hamster, Cricetulus Griseus, Jo A. Oostveen Apr 1983

Otopathology In Two Lines Of The Diabetic Chinese Hamster, Cricetulus Griseus, Jo A. Oostveen

Masters Theses

Recent evidence suggests that a bilateral, progressive sensorineural hearing loss is associated with diabetes mellitus in humans. The microangiopathy presumedly leading to this loss seems to be similar to microvascular changes leading to this loss seems to be similar to microvascular changes leading to renal and retinal deterioration. A total of twenty-four pairs of temporal bones from two diabetic, and one non-diabetic lines of the Chinese hamster were processed and evaluated for their total auditory histopathology. Hematoxylin and eosin serial sections demonstrated a mean otopathological involvement 5.6 times greater for diabetic animals compared to non-diabetic animals. Capillary basement membrane thickening …

Life History Of The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Henshawi, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, William F. Sigler, William T. Helm, Paul A. Kucera, Steven Vigg, Gar W. Workman Jan 1983

Life History Of The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki Henshawi, In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, William F. Sigler, William T. Helm, Paul A. Kucera, Steven Vigg, Gar W. Workman

Great Basin Naturalist

The Pyramid Lake Lahontan cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki henshawi) population was sampled on a monthly basis from November 1975 through December 1977. A subsample of 676 trout, stratified by fish size and lake habitat, provided biological data. The entire population is presently derived from hatchery production, stocked at lengths of approximately 75 to 300 mm. Peak annulus formation occurs in March and April, followed by the period of maximum growth. Scale patterns illustrate a variable growing season. Maximum growth in length is in the first three years of life; after that males begin to grow faster than females. …

Serial Cardiovascular Adaptations During Pregnancy, Mark Vincent Hart Jan 1983

Serial Cardiovascular Adaptations During Pregnancy, Mark Vincent Hart

Dissertations and Theses

Maternal cardiovascular adaptations appear to be essential in order to supply extra circulation to both the developing fetus and maternal system during a successful pregnancy. Since inadequate cardiovascular adjustments may produce abortions or maternal morbidity, the characterization of maternal cardiovascular changes during pregnancy and the elaboration of the underlying mechanism for these changes are essential to the understanding of how the heart enlarges during pregnancy and what significance this enlargement might have. To provide needed information regarding this time course and extent of maternal cardiac enlargement and the hormonal and hemodynamic changes which may be responsible for these changes, the …
