Currently available screening tests for prostate cancer (PCa) are neither very sensitive nor specific. Microparticles (MP) are submicron tumor cell fragments released by PCa cells into the circulation and offer a possible means of sampling the tumor. We evaluated the utility of a MP blood test using nanoscale flow cytometry to distinguish patients with PCa from patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We used monoclonal antibodies against prostate specific membrane antigen, gastrin releasing peptide receptor and ghrelin peptide ligand.

With aging, keratinocytes have diminished proliferative capacity resulting in atrophic skin with reduced barrier function. This investigation evaluates the effect of daily topical applications of a novel high-molecular weight hyaluronan cream (HA-PE) on keratinocyte renewal and epidermal thickness. Unmodified hyaluronan and HA-PE were mixed separately into a vehicle cream. Each topical formulation was applied daily onto the shaved backs of aged female C57BL6 mice. Full-thickness biopsies of treated skin were obtained for analysis of keratinocyte proliferation, keratinocyte differentiation, and local inflammation at days 1, 5, and 10 of cream application. The following work focuses on the objective evaluation of human performance for two different interventional tasks; targeted prostate biopsy tasks using a tracked biopsy device, and external ventricular drain placement tasks using a mobile-based augmented reality device for visualization and guidance. In both tasks, a human performance methodology was utilized which respects the trade-off between speed and accuracy for users conducting a series of targeting tasks using each device. Sepsis is characterized by a severe systemic inflammatory response to infection that is associated with high morbidity and mortality despite optimal care. Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are potent regulatory lymphocytes that can produce pro- and/or anti-inflammatory cytokines, thus shaping the course and nature of immune responses; however, little is known about their role in sepsis. We demonstrate here that patients with sepsis/severe sepsis have significantly elevated proportions of circulating iNKT cells in their peripheral blood, as compared to non-septic patients. Intracranial vessel wall imaging may be accomplished with high-field (7T) magnetic resonance (MRI). To determine its feasibility, a 7T MR protocol was defined using Polyvinyl-alcohol cryogel (PVA-C) phantom vessels and healthy subjects.

A 2D matrix construct of PVA-C vessel phantoms of different diameters and wall thicknesses was scanned. Three observers measured the phantom images, one of which three times. Physical measurements were performed using a digital caliper. Ten volunteers were scanned using three different MRI sequences (TSE-3D, FLAIR, MPRAGE). The current study describes the lived experiences of stakeholders in a community-based fetal alcohol spectrum disorders assessment clinic. A qualitative methodology was used. Five participants, one caregiver and four professionals, were interviewed about their experiences. Six themes emerged from this process including: clinic organization: systemic strengths and challenges; attitudes and approach: laying the foundation; beyond yes or no: assessment and diagnosis; the moment of truth: delivering the diagnosis; outcomes: what happens after the diagnosis?; what does the future hold? next steps and needs.
