Patient Preference In Two Types Of Colostomy Irrigations, Mildred Ann Marks

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purposes of this study were threefold: (1) to find which method of colostomy irrigation (enema bag vs. bulb syringe) was best accepted by colostomy patients; (2) to functionally evaluate the two types of colostomy irrigation methods; and (3) to report the results of this study to medical personnel interested in advancements for colostomy irrigations. The population in this study consisted of colostomy patients who had irrigated on a regular basis with the bag technique for a minimum of six months. Twelve colostomates completed this study by recording the parameter of time, amount of irrigation fluid used, quality of return, …

A Clinical Study Of Cuspid And Incisor Retraction Using The Mechanics Of Charles H. Tweed, Eugene R. Humphries

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A controlled clinical study of cuspid and incisor retraction using the mechanics advocated by Charles H. Tweed on class I four first bicuspid extraction cases was conducted. A carefully restricted sample of seven patients, three boys and four girls, was treated by seven graduate orthodontic students at Loma Linda University.

Measurements were made at monthly intervals to assess cuspid, incisor, and molar movements. Data were collected at each appliance adjustment to evaluate pain, difficulty, length of appointment, and the observations and impressions of each clinician regarding the technique.

The mean rates of cuspid movement during the cuspid retraction phase of …

Value Of Oxygen With Innovar And Methohexital For Outpatient Oral Surgery, Andrew D. Harsany May 1972

Value Of Oxygen With Innovar And Methohexital For Outpatient Oral Surgery, Andrew D. Harsany

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This paper demonstrates the value of oxygen in maintaining arterial blood gas in an adequate range during outpatient oral surgery. Dental extractions were completed on ten patients under an anesthetic technique utilizing Innovar and methohexital with supplemental nasal oxygen. Blood gas samples were drawn at five stages during the procedure.

The mean of the PaO2 samples drawn with the patient at the point of deepest sedation was approximately three times the normal value.

Oxygen for pulmonary ventilation provides a reservoir in the lungs, saturation of hemoglobin, and increased oxygen in the plasma which provides a margin of safety if …

Endodontic Sealing Properties Of Cavit, Chloro-Rosin Gutta Percha, N2, And Silver Cones Using Radioisotopes, Frank H. Beal

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The main purpose of this investigation was to test the endodontic sealing abilities of silver cones, N2, warm gutta percha, chemically softened gutta percha, laterally condensed gutta percha and Cavit under carefully controlled conditions. Evaluations were done by radiographic, macroscopic, microscopic, and autoradiographic examinations.

The four points which must be considered when evaluating the efficacy of sealing root canal systems, in vivo, were presented and discussed.

Cavit as a total endodontic filling material was presented, investigated and discussed.

An improvement of the chloro-rosin - gutta percha diffusion technique was presented.

The concept of surface as well as marginal leakage was …

A Clinical Evaluation Of A Technique Utilizing Plastic Modules For Cuspid And Incisor Retraction, Dwane I. Johnston May 1972

A Clinical Evaluation Of A Technique Utilizing Plastic Modules For Cuspid And Incisor Retraction, Dwane I. Johnston

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In a clinical study, polyurethane-type plastic modules were evaluated for use in retracting cuspids and incisors in Class I extraction cases.

Seven patients were selected to be treated with a technique utilizing these plastic modules. All cases were in Class I molar relationship and were either bimaxillary, protrusive or had tooth-size, arch-length discrepancies.

Evaluation was based on rate of cuspid and incisor retraction and the control of molar anchorage during the retraction phase.

At four-week intervals data were collected on space closure. At the same time, such subjective data as amount and duration of pain, difficulty of appliance adjustment and …

Selected Factors Related To Ability To Regain Bladder Function Following Indwelling Catheterization, Jongkolnee Padmasiri May 1972

Selected Factors Related To Ability To Regain Bladder Function Following Indwelling Catheterization, Jongkolnee Padmasiri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory retrospective study was designed to evaluate selected factors, including the ability to regain bladder function related to post indwelling urethral catheterization in an acute general hospital population.

The records of 107 patients who met the study criteria became the study population. These patients had three-way urethral catheters, continuous antibacterial irrigation and closed drainage system. Twenty patients died (19 percent) before the catheter was removed. Of the 87 patients who were alive, 37 percent (32 patients) had in-adequate bladder function. Of these 32 patients, no attempt was made to remove the catheter from 15 prior to their hospital discharge. …

A Clinical Comparison Of Six Orthodontic Techniques, Erik H. Madsen May 1972

A Clinical Comparison Of Six Orthodontic Techniques, Erik H. Madsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Controversy exists concerning the relative superiority of various orthodontic techniques because of the difficulties encountered in making comparative clinical studies of these techniques which are scientific and statistically meaningful. The purpose of this study was to clinically compare six different orthodontic techniques which are currently being taught, relative to a number of criteria, and to do it in a scientifically significant manner.

In order to eliminate as many of the irrelevant variables as possible, the patients were required to pass a relatively stringent screening to participate. Among other things, the patients had to have first molars in Class I relation …

A Clinical Evaluation Of The Light Progressive Technique During Cuspid And Anterior Retraction, Gary R. Keszler May 1972

A Clinical Evaluation Of The Light Progressive Technique During Cuspid And Anterior Retraction, Gary R. Keszler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to clinically evaluate cuspid and anterior retraction in first bicuspid extraction cases using the Light Progressive Technique. More specifically interest was centered on rate of cuspid and anterior retraction, anchorage preservation or control, difficulty of appliance adjustments, time involved in adjustments, frequency of adjustments, total retraction time, patient discomfort, root resorption, as well as a complete cephalometric appraisal. Seven patients were treated for ten months. The appliance was activated at three week intervals, and progress recorded monthly.

It was shown that this technique maintains molar anchorage during rapid cuspid retraction without relying on patient cooperation for …
