Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon Sep 1965

Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The administration of the antibiotic, Chloramphenicol, to pregnant rats just prior to, and for four days after delivery, diminishes the incidence of the so-called "Wasting Disease" in neonatally thymectomized rats.

A total of 50 rats were divided into the following groups:

  1. Thymectomy only---nonmedicated 17 rats
  2. Thymectomy only---medicated 12 rats
  3. Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---nonmedicated 5 rats
  4. Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---medicated 8 rats
  5. Controls---nonmedicated 4 rats
  6. Controls---medicated 4 rats

Chloramphenicol was administered in the drinking water to the mothers of groups 2, 4 and 6 for about 2 days prior to delivery and 4 days after. On the day of birth or within three days after birth, the …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Vomiting, Taye Grace Emori Sep 1965

A Study Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Vomiting, Taye Grace Emori

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The identification of anxiety as a causative factor in post operative vomiting was the purpose of this study. It was hypothesized that the more anxiety a patient experienced before surgery, the greater would be his chances of vomiting immediately after surgery.

The establishment of an underlying basis and need for a study of the relationship of anxiety and postoperative vomiting were made through a review of literature. The factors which researchers believed were contributory to postoperative vomiting and the possible inclusion of anxiety as one of them were studied.

Three physiologic measures (systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and eosinophil count) …

Nurse Attendance Versus Use Of Analgesic Medication In The First Stage Of Labor, Jo Ann Soulé Henriksen Jun 1965

Nurse Attendance Versus Use Of Analgesic Medication In The First Stage Of Labor, Jo Ann Soulé Henriksen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To determine if the woman who receives the continuous attendance of a nurse during the first stage of labor requires less analgesic medication than the woman who is given interrupted or intermittent nursing care, a study was made employing the experimental method with the parallel-group technique. Thirteen patients meeting the criteria of the study who received continuous nursing attendance during the first stage of labor by the nurse researcher were closely matched to thirteen patients from a group of one hundred seventy-three, whose nursing care was given by the staff personnel. As an objective method of assessing support during labor …

A Comparison Of Axillary And Rectal Temperatures In Children, Doris Payne Jun 1965

A Comparison Of Axillary And Rectal Temperatures In Children, Doris Payne

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted on seventy-five children, three to eight years of age. The purpose was to compare a three-minute axillary with a three-minute rectal temperature. Known factors which might influence the findings were eliminated. These were emotional stress, physical exercise, antipyretic medications, cooling and heating measures, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and croupettes or oxygen tents. The range of the difference between the temperatures was from 0.8 degrees to 2.2 degrees with the mean difference of 1.13 degrees. A little less than half of the temperatures had one degree of difference. An additional thirty-two per cent were within 0.2 degrees of being …

Development Of A Positioning Device For Use In Conjunction With Panoral Radiography, Ray M. Hymer Jun 1965

Development Of A Positioning Device For Use In Conjunction With Panoral Radiography, Ray M. Hymer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A cephalometric positioning device has been developed for use on the XRM Panorex X-Ray machine. Tests have demonstrated that the variability in producing serial radiographs with this device is comparable to, or less than, that currently accepted in conventional radiographic cephalometry.

Two procedures for obtaining serial radiographs were employed. Two patients were used for the first procedure and three patients were used in the second procedure.

In the first procedure each patient was positioned in the device and two radiographs were taken in sequence without disturbing the patient.

In the second procedure three clinic patients were used as subjects and …

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker May 1965

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Results revealed that in comparing the three Indian groups significant differences do appear. They are few and general concordance …
