Understanding Mental Health From A Candomblé Perspective, Kerilyn Daniel
Understanding Mental Health From A Candomblé Perspective, Kerilyn Daniel
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Candomblé is an Afro-Brazilian religion that has a strong presence in Brazil as a religious institution as well as a health center. Many turn to the houses of Candomblé (terreiros) for healing from not only physical ailments but mental illnesses as well. Candomblé has been very effective in healing mental illnesses even when Western medicine has proved ineffective. I have sought to understand how Candomblé perceives mental health and the treatment of mental illness. I have examined how they diagnose mental illnesses, how they understand the nature of the illness, and their healing methods. I have also explored more general …

A Two-Hour Basketball Practice Increases Landing Error Scoring System Scores In Female Collegiate Basketball Players, Caroline Wesley
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The high rate of knee injuries in women’s athletics has been well documented in recent years. There are multiple factors which contribute to the increased risk of injury in female athletes, including biomechanics when landing. Fatigue has also been examined as a contributing factor to injury, but few studies have utilized actual sport participation as a fatiguing protocol. No study has used the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) to examine the changes that may result from fatigue. The objective of our study was to use the LESS to examine the effects of a two-hour basketball practice on the landing biomechanics …

Management And Control Of Genetic Processes In Cotton Plants Through Homoeopathy, H Gangar
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Detailed study on effects of homoeopathic drugs on plant bodies was undertaken at Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (ICAR) in Mumbai. This paper presents promising results of some of these preliminary experiments. This study reveals that electrically neutral and pure distilled water develops internal electrical charges as soon as homoeopathic drugs are added into it. Different drugs as well as different potencies of same drug develop different electrical charges. Further experiments, conducted on plants, proved that medicated water containing drugs of highest potency strongly influences the genetic processes of plants. It can accelerate germination process, can shorten cultivation …

Clinical Evaluation Of The Homoeopathic Medicines In Chronic Cervicitis And Cervical Erosion – A Clinical Study: A Multicentric Open Clinical Trial Conducted By Ccrh, Central Council For Research In Homoeopathy Ccrh
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
There is no direct reference of Homoeopathic medicines found useful in chronic cervicitis and cervical erosion available in the Homoeopathic literature. The nearest reference to chronic cervicitis is given as vaginitis, i.e. ‘Inflammation, vagina’ and that of cervical erosion as ‘Excoriation’ in Kent’s Repertory. Some of the medicines under these rubrics have been clinically used by the profession in the treatment of chronic cervicitis and cervical erosion with favourable results. So the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) undertook this study. Patients for this prospective study were drawn from the general OPD of different units under Central Council for …

Damiana or Turnera aphrodisiaca has been traditionally used as an invigorating and aphrodisiac herb in different schools of medicine for centuries. In homoeopathy, however, its use has been made besides the above conditions, for various other disorders like amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, leucorrhoea, sterility and frigidity in females and spermatorrhoea, urinary tract infection and migraine in adults. It has also been used for incontinence of urine and affection of prostate in old people with success. The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy undertook a clinical study to verify and confirm the uses of Damiana as mentioned in the homoeopathic materia medica2,3 with …

Role Of Ashwangandha (Withania Somnifera) In Immune Modulation: Proposed Influence In Immune-Regulation, Subhasis Chattopadhyay, Robert E. Cone
SoM Articles
The immune system evolved to protect organisms from an infinite variety of disease-causing agents but to avoid harmful responses to self. However, such a powerf~dl efense mechanism requires regulation. Immune regulation includes homeostatic and cellmediated targeted mechanisms to the activation, differentiation and function of antigen-triggered immuno-competent cells and irnmunoregulatory cells. The regulation of the immune system has been a major challenge for the management of autoimmune disorders, tumor immunity, infectious diseases and organ transplants. However, irnmuno-modulatory procedures used by modern medicine to induce immunoregulatory function have deleterious side effects. Ashwangandha (Withania somnifera), an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine is being …
Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha
Ayurvedic Approach To Rheumatologic Disorders, Amala Guha
SoM Articles
In Ayurvedic texts rheumatologic diseases are described under 'Sandhgat Roga", the diseases of joints. Although many of the diseases under this category resemble rheurnatologic diseases classified under western medicine, the approach to differential diagnosis may be different. For greater understanding of Ayurvedic concept of rheurnatologic diseases only few diseases are discussed here. The case presentation of Amavafa provides greater understanding of how Ayurvedic differential diagnosis is made in context of its western counterpart, the rheumatoid arthritis.

The Experience Of A Lifestyle, Brian Lonsway
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
This essay traces the evolution of themed environment design from theme parks to a series of new architectural types – Urban Entertainment Destinations, Lifestyle Enhancement Centers, and Lifestyle Villages – as a chronicle of spatial mediation from urban décor to urban design technique. Culled partly through semiotic deconstruction and partly through ethnographic investigation, this history examines the environmental design techniques employed in these spaces in order to better understand the relationship of design practice to the cultural practices of work and leisure.
From spatialized branding strategies to the neo-urbanist configurations of location-based entertainment, leisure/entertainment ventures use these narratively motivated techniques …

A House Of Many Rooms: Healing Practice And The Ontology Of Health In Hmong Tradition And The Diaspora, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
Culture – the foundation of views about health and healing – is subject to modification, translation, and adaptation as it grapples with changes in its geographic, economic, and socio-political context. For the Hmong, an Indigenous people with a millennia-long history of regional and international migration, it can be said that their cultural context has been change itself. Given the empiricist certainty that Indigenous medical systems will invariably yield to modern education and the increased availability of biomedical services, the perpetuation of various traditional elements in the medical culture of the Hmong is nothing short of remarkable. As minorities in a …
