Honors Projects
“Preserving Ancient Cultures through Medicinal Narratives” is a comprehensive project that takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the effects that culture has on health. The project as a whole includes the initial work and readings I performed to better understand differences in healing between the cultures found throughout South America, where Inca culture is still prevalent, and that of the Unites States, as well as an independent documentary. The documentary contains my own personal commentary complemented by video clips of interviews I performed with individuals living in South America.
Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy
Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy
Senior Theses
The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.
The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.
This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications …

Methods to measure engagement were the utilization of the ACE™ Altarum Consumer Engagement (ACE) Measure™. By using a proven, researched tool to …
The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren
The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Faith-based nursing and healthcare is increasingly gaining popularity as the industry looks to minimize costs and improve health outcomes. Historically, qualitative studies have not shown the extent to which individuals and communities are impacted by health initiatives initiated by faith institutions. Healthcare technology can help support the specialty by providing increased quantity and quality data to analyze. Traditional, proprietary EMRs are too costly; however, open source systems offer a low cost, and easily modifiable option to non-profit, or smaller organizations. The data collected by an open source system allows organizations to improve the care that patients receive, and helps guide …

Using Meditation To Improve Measures Of Attention In Older Adults, Sabrina Ford
Using Meditation To Improve Measures Of Attention In Older Adults, Sabrina Ford
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Age-related cognitive decline greatly impacts quality of life for older adults. Previous research has indicated that meditation may act as a neuroprotective factor to prevent age-related cognitive decline. This thesis sought to replicate previous findings and investigate if a four-week meditation intervention would improve sustained attention. Participants 60 years and older (n=27, 17 female) were recruited and assigned to a focused-attention (FA) meditation or relaxation group which met for four weeks, three times a week. Resting-state EEG was used to collect individual alpha peak frequency (iAPF) and frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA). The Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) was also …

Assessing The Association Between Physical Activity And Prediabetes Using The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014, Mabeline Velez
Masters Theses
Prediabetes, a condition in which glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes, affects approximately 37% of adults in the United States and is a major public health concern. Extensive research has evaluated the association between physical activity (PA) and type 2 diabetes; however, few studies have examined the association between PA and prediabetes. Therefore, we evaluated the association between PA (including leisure time, occupational and total) and prediabetes status among adults, stratified by gender, using multinomial logistic regression models fit to serial cross-sectional 2007-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey …

The Relationship Between Frequency Of Yoga And Meditation On Ptsd Symptoms In Individuals Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence, Kimberly Polignani
Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has become a growing phenomenon in the United States,
affecting nearly 13% of the population. The adverse mental health outcomes from people who experience IPV are prevalent and more than half have a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therefore, therapeutic techniques for PTSD appear to be feasible for IPV survivors and their mental health issues. Complementary and alternative medicine has become a widely accepted approach for PTSD. Being two complementary and alternative medicine techniques, yoga and meditation are effective forms of therapy in many diagnoses, including PTSD. This study utilized a not-for-profit organization called the …
Yoga To Decrease The Stress Response: Gentle Yoga Encourages Faster Decline In Salivary Cortisol Concentrations Following Participation In Tsst, Tabetha Gaile Hopke
Yoga To Decrease The Stress Response: Gentle Yoga Encourages Faster Decline In Salivary Cortisol Concentrations Following Participation In Tsst, Tabetha Gaile Hopke
MSU Graduate Theses
Short-term, activation of the human stress response system is beneficial as it prepares the body to deal with stressors at hand (McEwen & Stellar, 1993). If this system is overactive or chronically active however, it can negatively impact health and longevity (Cohen, Janicki-Deverts, & Miller, 2007). According to a review conducted by Ross & Thomas (2010) implementation of a yoga practice has been shown to down-regulate the stress response system. The present study aimed to expand on current research involving yoga for stress reduction by exploring whether participation in gentle yoga could decrease the stress response more quickly than naturally …
Identification Of Human Postnatal Progenitor Cells With Multifaceted Regenerative Functions, Tyler T. Cooper
Identification Of Human Postnatal Progenitor Cells With Multifaceted Regenerative Functions, Tyler T. Cooper
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary effort to regenerate or replace a deficiency of functional cells/tissues, such as deteriorated vasculature in cardiovascular pathologies or depleted -cell mass in diabetes. The transplantation of pro-regenerative progenitor cell populations has demonstrated therapeutic benefits in pre-clinical models, although translation to clinical efficacy is limited by the paradoxical balance between cell expansion ex vivo and loss of regenerative functions in vivo. Herein, this thesis encompasses two distinct approaches to circumvent translational deficiencies; 1) prevention of hematopoietic progenitor cell differentiation during ex vivo expansion and 2) utilizing the secretome of pancreas-derived multipotent stromal cell as a …

Socioeconomic Status's Impact On The Experience Of Loneliness, Tessa Samuels
Sociology & Anthropology Theses
Loneliness is a feeling that is nearly universal, yet some people are more vulnerable to prolonged exposures of the experience of loneliness. Due to the subjective nature of loneliness, there is minimal literature on loneliness without the variable of social isolation (Hawkley et al. 2008, Ryan et al. 2008, Kearns et al. 2015, Lee and Ishii-Kuntz 1987) or social capital (Benner and Wang 2014, Andersson 1998, Ryan et al. 2008, Kearns et al. 2015) involved. There are numerous variables that impact loneliness. One must consider age — there has been solid gerontology research that reveals that elderly people are less …

The work presented here has 3 goals: establish the need for novel neurostimulation waveform solutions through a literature review, develop a neurostimulation pulse generator, and verify the operation of the device for neurostimulation applications.
The literature review discusses the importance of stimulation waveforms on the outcomes of neurostimulation, and proposes new directions for neurostimulation research that would help in improving the reproducibility and comparability between studies.
The pulse generator circuit is then described that generates signals inspired by the shape of excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials (EPSP, IPSP). The circuit analytical equations are presented, and the effects of the circuit …
Effects Of Niacin And Vitamin D On Endothelial Cell Angiogenic Function And Vascular Regeneration During Lipotoxicity, Kia Mae Peters
Effects Of Niacin And Vitamin D On Endothelial Cell Angiogenic Function And Vascular Regeneration During Lipotoxicity, Kia Mae Peters
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Observational studies have suggested an association between low levels of niacin and vitamin D and increased cardiovascular disease risk. Both vitamins have been shown to improve endothelial functions and vascular regeneration following vascular injury, however, it appears vitamin D may promote or inhibit neovascularization in a context-dependent manner. We hypothesized that supplementation of vitamin D alone and in combination with niacin, would improve endothelial cell function under lipotoxic conditions and promote revascularization and functional recovery in obese mice with ischemic injury. Matrigel assays, mRNA microarray analyses and growth rate assays were used to investigate angiogenic function of endothelial cells exposed …

The Effects Of A Yoga Intervention On Reactive Balance In Older Adults, Haley M. Hayes
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Research into successful aging has shown that the ability to control balance is a key part of maintaining an independent lifestyle. Given the increased proportion of older adults in society, the development of effective strategies to promote successful aging are critical. One promising form of activity that could effectively sustain and/or improve balance in addition to other health markers is yoga. Although studies have been done showing yoga's benefits on mobility, mood and cognition the vast majority of these studies lack scientific rigor. The main purpose of this thesis project was to examine the efficacy of a 6-week yoga intervention …
Screening Of Crude Microalgal Extracts For Antimicrobial Activity, Patrick Matulich
Screening Of Crude Microalgal Extracts For Antimicrobial Activity, Patrick Matulich
Theses & Dissertations
Microbial biofilm associated infections are a significant threat to patients with medical devices and are partially responsible for the increased resistance seen in nosocomial infections. The biofilm chemical and physical properties restrict access of chemotherapeutic agents. Therefore, there is a need to enhance the antimicrobial effects of current chemotherapeutic agents. Microalgae live in competitive environments that include film-forming, opportunistic pathogens S. maltophilia and C. albicans. Extracts from 5 diverse species of microalgae were screened for antimicrobial enhancing effects against established biofilms with two different extraction solvents, 3:1 hexanes and isopropyl (HIPA) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF).

An Integrative Approach To Mindfulness-Based Symptom Management For Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lisa Barer
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic health condition; its etiology is poorly understood, and treatment options are limited to management of symptoms. Current recommended treatment options are controversial, and evidence of effectiveness is limited. This paper proposes a novel model for symptom management of ME/CFS using mindfulness-based interventions, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and relaxation techniques. A comprehensive review of available evidence is used to support this approach. The idea is that, working synergistically, these three approaches, grounded by mindfulness-based principles, can address many of the symptoms of the illness and help patients better cope and manage their day-to-day …
Changing Brains, Changing Lives: Researching The Lived Experience Of Individuals Practicing Self-Directed Neuroplasticity, Tim Klein, Beth Kendall, Theresa Tougas
Changing Brains, Changing Lives: Researching The Lived Experience Of Individuals Practicing Self-Directed Neuroplasticity, Tim Klein, Beth Kendall, Theresa Tougas
Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Research Papers
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt both structure and function in response to sensory experiences. Self-directed neuroplasticity (SDN) specifically addresses the capacity to proactively modify cerebral function through volitional control and the intentional practice of focusing attention in desired ways. In other words, the mind can consciously change the brain. Self-directed neuroplasticity (SDN) approaches are successfully used to treat a range of challenges such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and emotional response regulation. However, no research describes the lived experiences of individuals practicing SDN across multiple modalities. Using semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this phenomenological inquiry describes the …

Dual Therapy Treatment Of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia With Blinotumomab And A Standard Chemotherapy Regimen, Tori I. Scheffler
Selected Honors Theses
Leukemia is the number one cancer affecting children in the nation, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia being the most prevalent classification.1 While new and innovative treatment protocols have greatly increased the success rate of primary cancer patients, those who face relapse receive a much more dismal prognosis. Recent studies have shown that patients who relapse quite frequently have developed drug-resistant clones of the original cancer cells, leading to a need for various secondary treatment options. The drug-resistance is due to clonal mutations that take place within the cancer cell, most often because of an outside pressure or stress within the environment …
